My newest phal

Hi All--

I recently bought another phal-- I was looking for a more exotic-looking flower and vibrant color and though the seller had an idea of what this plant would look like he couldn't be sure-- so I took the risk and ordered it. It has opened only a few days after bringing it home and I love it!

Here it is--

http://ryans.smugmug.com/photos/506296849_KPBMj-M.jpg

This is the first flower and it is quite nice, I think. The phal seems to have very good health in general and spends its day under my new grow-lights. It is in a mixture of bark, hydroton, charcoal and perlite-- very airy and light but doesn't soak the roots. It will be replanted after the flowers are done. I risk root rot but really the roots I can see are in excellent condition.

Now for the name... it is...

Phal. Rousserole (Carmela's Wild Thing X Adelaides Delight)

I like the color and a nice pic

Nice color! I like the tiger stripes up in the lip.

Thanks everyone!!!! The only issue I have is that I want to keep the plant in a stable environment so that it remains healthy and I've done that by putting it under my grow lights with my other phal, which isn't blooming presently. So I have to wonder into my grow room now and then to admire it!

Nothing wrong with good taste
I just love those combinations, the colors just shine.
The one in my avatar has quite big flowers as well. :)

Lene-- do you know the parents of your plant? I'm trying to figure out the genes of mine but don't know where to start. I mean, aren't a lot of hybrids babies of other crosses upon more crosses?

ChasWG 04-06-2009 11:15 PM

Where did you get the plant from Ryan? I just picked up a Phal stuartiana (species) from Tagawa this afternoon. They have all their orchids at 25% off! I couldn't pass this one up. It has a stalk with 4 buds on it. I just repotted it and the roots where outragous! I actually had to cut some of the longer ones off. The folks at Tagawa's let it get a little too dry. stuartiana likes to never ever totally dry out.

Chas-- my plant was an ebay score. Because my wife and I are expecting AND we're currently living in an apartment, we've gone through everything we own and have sold what we could on ebay or given it to Goodwill if wasn't:

1. Useful
2. Beautiful

Makes organizing very easy!!!!

So my ebay conquests have been very successful so I sprung for this one. I love it like air!!!!

When is the baby due?

July 25th! It'll be a baby girl named Anna. :goodluck:

ChasWG 04-06-2009 11:25 PM

Sweet! You'll be toast once she wraps you around her finger. That takes all of about 4 seconds, maybe less. Only afew short months left. Sleep now, because you won't later! ;)
Anna is a beautiful name!

Anna is a beautiful name!

I'm already able to talk to her and get her to kick her mum in the side  At least I like to think she's responding to me. She's a VERY active baby.

I was told there was a big simularity to the "Prince Lepard", but have not been able to find out for sertain, no...

Hi Chas--

The background is simply mat board you'd use to frame things. I do loads of photography on the side and as a hobby so I have these things around-- makes for a better presentation and allows me to capture my plants forever

The photo itself is a high dynamic range photo-- a series of shots using different shutter speeds but a common f-stop. This allows you to render a truer color and depth of range.

Here are some more...

This is cool! I have a plant of the same cross. Phal. Rousserole x (Phal. Carmela's Wild Thing x Phal. Adelaide's Delight). Here is my plant which is currently blooming. It's a first-time bloom with three flowers.

Wow Nik, yours has loads more white to it. Funny how different the same cross can be from one plant to the next. Where did you get yours? Mine was an ebay score.

Has yours grown its new leaf(ves) yet? Mine has pushed out two-- both have interesting patterns on them-- similar to a species plant--- yet the adult leaves have no markings. I hope the marking don't fade away-- they look great.

ChasWG 06-22-2009 11:00 PM

Ryan, I like the HDR photos! Nicely done. How many different exposures do you use to make one complete photo?

Sorry, I hadn't seen your response to my question. Thanks for the info. Where do you get that board?

I got mine on eBay as well. The seller is mijo730. I emailed him (Mike) and he says that he has more plants, so I'm in the process of picking up three more from him. They aren't in spike, but that is just a matter of time. There hasn't been any new leaf action as of yet.

Blueszz 06-23-2009 03:10 PM

Beautiful those tiny dots and tiger stripes + the vibrant color!

Blueszz 06-23-2009 03:14 PM

Nik, your's is stunning but making me kind of dizzy ;)

That is so funny, I bought from the same seller! He has very nice plants, doesn't he? I've been very happy with my purchases from him and he takes such car to ship them, too.

Very nice Ryan
