I just wanted to share with you this purchase I made at Walmart last week, although I know there are those who stay away from NOIDS.

There were only a few phals left in the garden section but this little yellow phal stood out from among the greenery. It's such a cute little thing but when I realized there were 2 phals in the pot, and the other one in spike too , and it was only $10CDN:), I thought I just couldn't pass it up.

Best of all though, I didn't expect it to be fragrant! I didn't detect any scent when I bought it. I go to work quite early so I don't have a chance to tend to my orchids until late afternoon. Sometimes I think I detect a scent but it's so faint it's hardly worth noticing. This morning, I smelled one flower that just opened a few days ago, and I got a blast of sweet cinnamon! Score! I don't have any other fragrant phals yet so this is such a pleasant surprise.

I emailed the grower and they told me it's name is Goldie. I was comparing it to images I found in the web but they don't exactly match. In any case, that's the name I'm sticking to. I'm very happy with this phal and I hope the second plant in the pot will also be fragrant.

That IS a great buy!!! NOID or not, it's beautiful!! I just love yellow orchids, especially yellow phals!

Now that is a great buy!! 2 for the price of one, gorgeous yellow blooms, AND fragrant. You sure were lucky to find it. I love the colors!

Cool deal ! Nothing wrong with noids . ( I have I think 16 of them ) Although I'm buying named species mostly at this time I still check Lowes when I'm there.

Yeah!!!...A two-fer and a beauty, latebloomer! Great price too. Are they both, in bloom? You may be surprised with a completely different plant, which will be fun to find out!

Enjoy!

Who could pass up a "twofer" and fragrant to boot. I'd have bought it too.

JustANoid 03-07-2009 11:09 PM

How pretty. I never see any like that here.

latebloomer 03-07-2009 11:50 PM

I've been wondering myself how the other one will look. I'll certainly send an update!

Orchidwiz lists a P Goldie, a large flat yellow with spots.

So I'm afraid it's not a NOID after all. :) Goldie is a cross between the species P fasciata and a big white named Snow Chief.

Very nice flower-- I love the waxy yellows. And the fragrance is a big plus.

Great buy!

It's a great tip to try and contact the grower of a NOID in case they have more info. Most growers only have specific hybrids and and so can tell you what it is. I recently managed to get the name of my new Paph by looking at the growers website... it turns out they only grow one, so now I know what it is.

Anyway yours is gorgeous :cheer: I would have snapped it up as well.

Thanks for looking up the parentage, Mehitabel! I had to google P fasciata and I do see the "resemblance" :)
