What medium do your Phals live in?

all of mine appear to be in wood chips?
I'm going to be repotting them asap and just wanted to see what other Phal owners have theirs growing in.

I'm not sure what I even have available where I live...

Some in sphagnum moss, some in SH, some in hydroton in regular pot, one mounted. Each has bloomed . It's a matter of personal choice I guess

thanks bellini girl but what is SH?

CoolPhrog 01-05-2009 06:16 PM

SH = semi-hrdoponics (Welcome to First Rays Orchids)

I have couple of my phals mounted (upside-down of course...lol) and most of the others are in fir bark, charchol and perlite. Two are in spag/cork chunks but the three that are in the for bark mix are the only ones that are in spike.

All mine are in aliflor and clear pots. Seems to be the answer to my some frail looking phal from the past. I do have one that is in a white plastic pot and it surprises me as it is one of my healthiest ones. I am not really convienced that phals care there type of medium to cover there nosy root tips, they just like to have there feet damp but not wet and allowing them to dry a bit works well for my growing conditions.

Some of my phals are in sphagnum moss and bark.
Others, are in a peatmoss based mix.

Mine were in sphag then I repotted in store bought Phal mix. Sphag holds too much water for my growing habits and they seem to be doing better in the new mix.

I grow mine in 50% coir and 50% monterrey bark. It works for me. :)

Shirley 01-05-2009 09:23 PM

My phals are mostly in a mix of sphag and perlite and they seem to be happy. The perlite helps get air to the roots and they don't stay wet as long as with all sphag.

:)

Myst,

rogerman 01-06-2009 09:58 AM

The ones that i have potted are in Spag and coconut mix with clay balls..... and the ones that are still in flasks will go into the same media.

mehitabel 01-06-2009 11:19 AM

Looks like everyone has different growing habits and different mix.

Mine are currently in coconut husk chips, in aircone pots with extra holes burned into the bottom for extra root aeration.

This has given the best results I've had in 5 years.

quiltergal 01-06-2009 03:40 PM

Most of mine are in coconut husk chunks, perlite, and charcoal. 2 are in S/H. All but the summer bloomers are either blooming or in spike.

Seedlings are in clear pots, extra holes for air, media is straight perlite with a layer of sphag (for anti-algae/fungi protection).

All of them watered S/H via a shared reservoir.

Lights and fans, try to keep humidity about 70% but it creeps higher sometimes.
