Hey Kitty.... did you make your own "brew" to sow your seed or did you purchase a commerically available blend? Just some quick details....please.

doodlekitty 12-27-2008 09:00 AM

Hi Biker,

I have several I plan to try, but for this batch I used media from the Kitchen culture Kit (am I allowed to say that?)

BikerDoc5968 12-27-2008 09:07 AM

Yes, Kitty, this board is liberal enough in their policies to allow public exchange of information to aid others in the persuit of this hobby....thanks. What "others" are you planning to try? And, do you have a web site for the Kitchen Kit people? Did a search and found it....thanks

:photo: Hi Biker,

I cooked up some goop from Phytotechnology.....and am watching for contamination before I proceed. Glad you found the TCK site. Just thought I'd post an updated pic of the "babies".

This is amazing to watch! Good growing! :-)

Those little green blobs don't look like orchids yet, but it's so cool to watch them get bigger!

Cool! Are you planning on using a different medium when you replate? Also, are you venting your flasks?

BikerDoc5968 02-02-2009 04:30 PM

I've always wanted to do something like this but didn't think I could. I've pollinated lots of my own phals and had pods but that's as far as I took it. I'm encouraged but what becomes of the poor guys that "appear" to be deeply imbedded in the growing media? Do they get their heads above ground at some point?

This is so cool to watch! Thanks for this great thread Doodlekitty!

doodlekitty 02-07-2009 08:58 AM

You're welcome and thanks for the support! So I've decided to replate today....I made up the media 10 days ago and yes, Joseph I vented my flasks (well the ones with jar lids I vented, the others have the magenta caps). Wish me luck!!! I'm not going to reflask everything, just experimenting...they look sooooooo crowded.

MEANWHILE, one of my epi pods opened ...I didn't catch it in time, so I'm going to try to do the dry seed approach with it. The current seeds were sown from green pod.

Oops...I also meant to comment on Biker's question about the little guys who are buried in the media: I have no idea!! Can I get some advice on that particular topic??

Congrats! Isn't it fun watching them grow? I had "New Year Babies" last year, which are now 2"-4" tall. To answer your question about the submerged babies....they should be fine until replate. Although, some may brown out if left there too long. I would make the replate media a little more consistent (add a little more agar, or a little less water). I have found they do better with a stiffer re-plate....about the consistency of Jello. When the roots stay too wet, they don't tend to develop their velamin (white coating on the roots used for water absorption) as quickly. But this is just my opinion...:goodluck:
