Ascocentrum miniatum

I like these small Vandaceous plants. They need little room, are vigorous growers and generally their flowers have vibrant colors, like this orange!

Oh wow, that orange is so bright! :faint: I love these guys because of their colors, but I don't know this genus very well. Do they need the same conditions as vandas (i.e. light)?

Yes, Camille, they are grown the way the regular Vandas are! These small guys are very cool to have, but you need lots of light!

That's really pretty Mauro. Looks like you have some media in the basket??

Lecent

camille1585 12-05-2008 04:12 PM

Looks like I can't grow them then. :( Don't have enough light october to april, and I don't have powerful grow lights.

Allors, tu devais considérer l'idée de vivre plus au sud! En France, Marseille serait un bon choix, non?

camille1585 12-05-2008 04:45 PM

Good French Mauro!:)
Oui, le sud c'est le meilleur endroit pour les plantes. Hopefully I'll move to the south once I graduate and get a job, since most of the seed companies in France are near Toulouse and Avignon. Nice perfect orchid weather!

Ross 12-05-2008 04:51 PM

I like these as well Mauro, but have decided to stay with Angraecoides. Otherwise I'd sure be tempted.

Merci, Camille! I lived in France for a while (Paris), working for a multinational company.

I guess with Angraecoides you have more choices, don't you, Ross?

Hi Mauro...that is a wonderful miniatum, and the detail in the close-up is amazing, especially for such a small flower. :bowing

By the way, they are quite vigorous as you've pointed out...and this little guy will be busting out of it's container in no time. Unless of course it's just a small piece of a much larger plant already. :)

orchideric 12-06-2008 01:16 AM

Dear Mauro,

Your plant is actually Ascocentrum garayi from Thailand that was long mistaken for A. miniatum. The true A. miniatum is from Java and has reddish-orange flowers and longer, curved leaves.

Hope that helps, Eric

I guess that there's a lot of garayi mislabeled as 'miniatum' here in Brazil, then:)! Thanks, Eric, I'm changing the label of mine to Ascocentrum garayi.
