Hi and welcome! 5500 orchids, that quite an operation! That has got to be a lot of work, but well worth it I'm sure :)

You said you're a commercial grower... do you just deal there in Thailand, or are you exporting as well?

go ahead and post the thai names, somebody will be able to translate, and it's always interesting to see what they're called in other places.

It's actually growing in Coconut husk;)

rogerman 11-19-2008 06:56 AM

I'm actually only part way through what i will need for filling up the shade house. I seem to be selling lots.I am aiming for at least 20,000. Then I can start filling my new orchid house...... Which is 16,000 square metres :bananaslide:

I have mainly "Chang" (ryn), Cattleya, Vanda, and what they call "Wai" (dendrobium).

I also have a good number of crossbreeds which are VERY nice.

Potting is not a hard task. I buy the seedlings/cultures in "Jonny Walker" bottles. When they are big enough to plant, I break the bottle open, wash and put in a basket to let them harden for about a week.
For the Cattleya and Dendrobium plants, i get a three inch piece of coconut fibre, split it in half, put the plant in the split and then put into the pot..... Thats it!!:bowing :winner:

lambelkip 11-22-2008 06:26 PM

these first one and the fourth one are great. what are they called?

Tsuchibuta 11-22-2008 07:41 PM

Welcome.. do you grow any odd genera as well? Other than the usual Catts, Dendros, Phals, Vanda..

greenbean 11-22-2008 09:34 PM

:hello Wow, you are so lucky to live in an area that just requires a shade house! And so many orchids!!!

The vandas in the first and third picture are exquisite. As is the orchid in the fourth picture. Could you tell me what they are called. Thai names are fine. As lambelkip said, I can probably find someone on Orchid Board who can translate them.

Welcom and enjoy the OB!

rogerman 11-23-2008 08:15 AM

The first one is a mix between "Chang" and "Asco centrum" i think.

Third one is called "Farmui".

Fourth one is called "Kou Krak".

Yes!! You are right. I have no power in the shade house and no real need. Of course i have water. At the moment, as i'm not yet finished, i'm just watering by hose. I'll have a basic sprinkler system set up soon. Have just cleaned out my fish pond today and potted 200 plants:shock:

I can now translate the name of the plant that i have the most of. It's called "Chang" It is actually Rhynchostylis and i have about ten different varieties of it.

Wow you got me drooling over your collection.

Took a lot of time putting everything up... I did it all on my lonesome and it's still a work in the progress;)

Total area is about 300 square metres. I had to get the land raised before i did anything, so thinking:scratchhead: ahead, i mixed coarse sand in with the soil to semi-break it up. This provides good drainage in monsoon season as well as keeps the topsoil moist. I also have a huge fishpond there also to help with humidity. I have a small shade house at the back for the new plants to harden up for a month. That house is using 80% shade cloth..... the main house is using 50% shade cloth..... keeps the sun down yet not reducing it too much;) :bananaslide:
