not to sound like a jerk....but Im not changing my tags because taxonomists need something to do. Im starting to think that they're in kahoots with the tag companys.

I considered changing and did a few and quit. Even though you don't change the names in your collection it is still necessary to know and become familiar with the new names when you encounter them. If you use RHS it is almost a must because they use the new names exclusively. I was at a total loss when I first started using it.

thats the nice thing about AQ Plus (one of the only nice features).....it will still take the old names and give you the new ones

:faint: 'Taxonomists can never agree on something and stick with it! They made some really major changes this time. What's the point of changing names on labels since the names are probably going to change again it a few years?
The name changes were really annoying in my first two years of college where I was taking botany courses. The first year we learned the names of some 500 plants, then some of them changed and we were expected to be up to date. And some of the new names were impossible to learn. Coleus blumei, nice and easy, became the tongue twisting Solenostemon scutellarioides I wouldn't be surprised if most of what I learned then is now outdated.

It was exactly the same for me studying botany and horticulture 25 years ago.

Back in the day, taxonomic classification was pretty much based on plant location, obvious physical characteristics, and the ability of plants to interbreed. It was kinda chunky and hard to tell that some genus were related. Now with DNA analysis and genetic markers, ever smaller and smaller differences can be detected. The taxonomic list is only going to get larger at an increasing pace as analysis techniques become more refined. From a hobby stand point, it sucks. From a scientific stand point, it's brilliant because the taxonomy will become more like the smooth curve of a spectrum to reflect the evolutionary changes of orchids rather than distinct blocks of plants that don't seem related. :twocents:

Cheers.

You know, I believe if you took a poll about what orchid enthusiast think of the name changing by taxonomist, most will agree with Jim that "it sucks"

Orchid names are always changing. The only time anyone cares is when it's something they grow.

I gave up on changing my tags...the only time I make sure the newest name is on the tag is when the plant is being entered in a show for judging.

I do try to keep up with the new names so I know what I'm looking at but they make it so hard to keep up! :bua:

I started changing some but then they either got changed again or they reverted back depending on who was looking at them.

So I will leave them until we have a clear decision and they are universally accepted. It's getting more confusing all the time.
