Hi, I bought a cat on sale, it had already bloomed. I have had it for 5 yrs. & cannot get it to bloom. It's healthy & is finally outgrowing the pot. What is your secret ?

linsoo 10-22-2008 04:14 PM

cattleya my first bloom ever!

I would love to share my secret - if only I knew! The only thing I did different this year was put all my orchids outside for the summer. We had the wettest summer ever here in Ontario and i fretted that my orchids were getting too much rain However they all seem to be doing better than ever! Go figure.

Most cattleyas flower annually provide you have given them enough (TLC) Temperature, Light and Cookies. Cattleyas are epiphytic and you should simulate their natural growing environment. They like moderate to high temperature and a daily fluctuation of around 20 degrees (F). They love the sun but hate direct sunlight; the pseudobulbs (leaves) should be light green vs dark green. Like you and me, they love to eat. Treat them with weak fertilizer when watering (I do it 1/4 strength) and throughout flushing once every 2 months with plain water to avoid salt build up. Remember to let them completely dry out before watering. I hope this helps. Enjoy and good luck.

That's a pretty good first attempt! Congratulations, now you can flower many more.
