Thirties
Yep, that's what we're (in Michigan) headed for in the next few days - maybe 20's. This begins, officially, the "I've got it worse than you" winter seaon. I hope to see pics from Ramon (he's got a lot of us "northerners" beat at latitude and snow :bowing ) and others like Kiki and the Maine/Minnesota crew. Come on folks, I know you can do us snow-birds proud and show the southerners what it's like to live up here! Why do we do this :scratchhead:  I have no idea! It is cooler in summer and we have plenty of water. Maybe that's why. :scratchhead: Hope I didn't anyone out, 'cause I know we have some Swedes and other Balkan states represented here that can probably outdo us Great Lakes States.

Even here in the Netherlands, at a much higher latitude than you, the weather is better! Sunny and 18°C (64°F) today. But they are forecasting windy chilly weather the rest of the week.
Ross, send me your snow this winter, I miss it! You can have our nasty dutch weather in exchange: high winds, freezing rain, freezing temps and 3 days of sun per month! And I have to ride my bike in that weather all winter long. Glad to know your snowblower is ready! |

Basel is in a very privileged position and we have very mild weather here, not to hot in summer (well, sometimes it becomes VERY hot, but it does not lats too long) and also not very cold winters (normally snow does not last longer than two days :)) The problem is that it rains a lot! and changes a lot, so that suddenly you are freezing your a... and one week later you are sitting outside in t-shirts :) e.g. two weeks ago, I was wearing winter clothes, last weekend I was doing some trekking in t-shirt :) I would prefer colder winters, in the -5°C to -10°C , then it would be cold but dry, and that's easier to deal with ;) ...and if you go a bit to the south (Ticino) you even have palm trees growing around the lakes :) |

The palm trees grows in Ticino (called the Florida from Switzerland) the lakes (Lugano and Lago Maggiore) are kind of deep in the valleys and receive also some dry warm weather from the south... two weekends ago, when I went to the Locarno Orchids show, we had 28°C there :) |
Ross, check this...

It's down to -7C tonight here and then up to high of 10C. Go figure! I still think I like it here because my kids are here and I don't have to mow the lawn in the winter  (or water it either!)
|
While it isn't quite as cold here were you are Ross, we have already had our first snow of the season on 10/11/08! But of course our temps have bounced back up and it is 75 degree's today but returning to more normal temps (55-60) for the rest of the week! You can never tell what the winter will bring with our weather here in Idaho...it is always wacky!
|
Well, shoot. I guess since you've got the 30s and 40s now, Ross, it won't be too much longer till we get some of that over here. I hate the approaching winter. I could do NYC summers year-round.

22F degrees here this morning folks! The frost has hit so hard that the lawn is snowwhite these mornings!
It's not pretty! I am having new sneakers put on my SUV this coming Monday....Getting wood into the basement this week. Got my sphagnum moss picked and ready for winter. Moved my chids to their designated winter windows. Hunkering down! :cold I'll try to get :photo: before the camera freezes. Not making any promises.  |

You water lawn !? does that not make it grow, and then you have to mow it which means you you must then fertilize it which means you must mow and water again .
I am thinking of replacing my lawn with a slab of concrete painted green . Just think ,life without mowers weed wakers and lawn fertilizers and watering Equals more time with your chids and most important at my age ,more sleep. Now if I could just persuade my wife......  |
That sounds pretty cold to me.
Tomorrow here 64F but warming to 86F by Saturday. The climate here fluctuates a lot this time of year. But at least I can't complain about that kind of cold. |
