Discussion of the Cool Mystery Plant

cb977 10-16-2008 09:04 PM

Anybody who wants to post pictures of their blooming COOL Mystery Project plant or discuss it can do so in this thread...

DON'T talk about it in the regular forums PLEASE!

let the show begin...

stonedragonfarms 11-30-2008 08:29 PM

Cool (and I do mean COOL :) ) growers...where are you?

;)

cb977 12-12-2008 06:33 PM

Okay...I'm going crazy here!!!

Mine has had at least 8 buds and every single one of them have blasted!

I have had it in both tanks, one gets to be 68-70 and the other goes to about 72-72. There's constant air movement, it's getting watered and fed as it "should"...

what the *&(*^ am I doing wrong??? :bua:

camille1585 12-12-2008 06:41 PM

All 8 blasted??:_( Talk about tough luck! Wish I could help, but since I have no clue what the plant is (and don't even have it) I'm clueless too. Maybe it's a humidity issue?

CoolPhrog 12-12-2008 11:26 PM

Maybe it's getting too much light? Try putting it lower in the big tank

shakkai 12-13-2008 05:04 AM

I haven't had 8 buds - only three, but just like you Sue, they hae each gotten so far, then dried up. I was thinking humidity and was going to try to up that after Christmas. Too much to do for now, and I don't want to change the plants environment before we go away for a week to the in-laws (just in case something isn't right).

Hopefully, between us we can figure it out!

cb977 12-13-2008 08:38 AM

I'm going to try moving it lower in the tank. The big tank it was in has very high humidity so I don't think it's that :(

As you said...between us, maybe we can figure it out :crossfing

stonedragonfarms 12-13-2008 09:24 AM

Sue--
From what I am reading, I wonder if you are growing too warm...it almost sounds like growing cymbidiums too warm (if you keep them above 55F or so when the buds are forming, they only get so far, then they blast); is it possible to try moving your plant somewhere cooler with relatively constant temps...say low 60's?
Keep us posted...
Adam

LauraN 12-18-2008 08:21 AM

I've held off on posting these, as I figured that everyone would probably be getting blooms ?!
This one arrived and within 1 week had buds showing and I ended up with at least 7 flowers the first go round.

Here it is just starting to open

More blooms coming...

Typical bloom
http://www.orchidboard.com/community...m/IMG_7529.jpg

I hate to say this to the rest of you, but this one sends out a full company of blooms, but once they all die off I have new buds within 3-4 weeks. It is currently on it's third blooming cycle!

I grow this one like all my others...Very high light and very warm ???!
I haven't had a bud blast yet.
I did however give it a talk when it arrived explaining the conditions in the Orchid Room, so sink or swim.
I have honestly had very good luck with 90% of the plants that I choose to grow in there, regardless of the grower conditions that are recommended.

cb977 12-18-2008 08:25 AM

Well Laura...you need to come over and have a little talk with a few of the chids here ;)

I need you

shakkai 12-18-2008 10:01 AM

Congrats, Laura! It must really like you! I've got a lot of new leaves, but each bud has dried up before opening...

Those are beautiful pictures, BTW! Really, really lovely plant. I'm so happy that it has settled in so well for you!

Do you water more than once a day?

LauraN 12-18-2008 10:06 AM

I water once a day when it is warm and every 3 days or so when it is cool.
I never water more than once a day unless it is really hot in there, and usually even then I just water the floor and wood walls to create some humidity and cool things down a bit. Which is probably the reason that my brachiata is sooo unhappy!

quiltergal 12-18-2008 03:57 PM

Aw Laura! It's so cute! I wish I had gotten the cool grower too! Dang! Maybe this guy is a pseudo cool grower and really likes warmer conditions than folks are giving it?? :scratchhead:

cb977 12-18-2008 04:37 PM

If the next bud on mine blasts, this one is going out in the orchid room with the warm-growing crowd...and I still want Laura to come over and give it a scolding! ;)

LauraN 12-18-2008 04:45 PM

Will Do!

cb977 12-18-2008 04:47 PM

...and that's just part of why I love you :)

cb977 01-07-2009 09:38 AM

I moved this one out into the WARM orchid room a few weeks ago...and two days ago, I noticed three new buds!
Saw this morning that one of them blasted  but the other two look like they might actually make it! :cheer: :crossfing :cheer:

So much for COOL grower theories ;)

shakkai 01-07-2009 11:52 AM

That's fantastic, Sue! Way to go!! I've got my :crossfing for those two buds of your's!

:goodluck:

cb977 01-15-2009 08:53 AM

Happy day!!!...and a bit of curiosity...

Well, I moved it out to the orchid room a few weeks ago where the normal temps during the day at this time of year are in the mid-high 80s and night temps drop into the 60s.

I posted earlier that one of the three buds I noticed soon after moving it had blasted but I had high hopes for the remaining two...

(/udb)

This makes me wonder about the given temperature range. Laura (her plant is blooming like mad!) and I have these chids out where it's rather warm, Dana (her plant is also blooming like mad!) has hers at what would be considered more intermediate temps...

is anybody growing this in true "cool" conditions and getting it to bloom?

:hmm

LauraN 01-15-2009 08:55 AM

Well, today mine is growing and blooming in cool conditions

cb977 01-15-2009 08:58 AM

LOL...it is a little brisk here this morning, isn't it? :coverlaugh:

CoolPhrog 01-20-2009 10:17 PM

Mine just finished with a roun dof 4 flowers and this morning, just as the last flower ended, there are three more!

shakkai 01-25-2009 02:16 PM

Yippee!! I just got a flower on mine! After what Laura said about hers, I moved mine to somewhere a bit warmer (not warm, but probably on the cool side of intermediate - but away from where I grow the Masdies). Its a bit out of the way, so I wasn't seeing it every day like I do my Masdies, and I noticed a bud yesterday when I was watering!! Today it has opened!!

Thanks for the tip Laura!! Sue, I'd say it doesn't like to be as cool as the Masdies...

cb977 01-25-2009 02:25 PM

Way to go, Shannen! :wtg:

Mine has been moved outside to the chid room where it's warm and has since bloomed...and is now growing two new growths!

This one is listed as cool/intermediate...I'm thinking the word cool should just be removed from that one!

camille1585 01-25-2009 02:29 PM

It looks so nice! Makes me wish I had also gotten the 'cool' grower mystery plant....

quiltingwacko 01-25-2009 02:54 PM

DH is on a picture taking roll today. I am trying to catch up posting them. He takes much better pics than moi. :blushing: this little guy likes lots of water. I water it everyday now and no more shriveled blooms. It is just like the other one I have in that respect. The bloom is a little different than the brachypus though.

quiltergal 01-25-2009 04:00 PM

Neato you guys! I may have to order this one as a TC for the next project in April. :)

I can see why this would be considered a cool grower. Since the temps have dropped, mine has been going crazy!!! It has always grow well since I received it. By the end of "fall" here, it had already put out 4 or 5 new growths and bloomed countless times. In the last 2 months, it has 6 more new growths and well...you see the blooms...I think this is the most it has been in bloom at all once...

I'm not sure but I think it's happy...:blushing:

Sorry for the crummy pictures, through the glass of the vivarium

cb977 02-15-2009 04:13 PM

Must you torture me? :tapfoot:

:coverlaugh: Only kidding...it looks great! :wtg:

LauraN 02-16-2009 09:29 AM

Holy Smokes! That looks fabulous! Great job Dana, Yours is the happiest by far!

camille1585 02-16-2009 09:43 AM

Dana, yours looks stunning!! It looks really super happy where it is growing. Nice terrarium by the way, it looks really natural. Do you have other pics of it?

What a lovely little 'chid the flower is so sweet I love the colour, I havent been fond of these before but yours,CB, has won me over.

cb977 03-27-2009 02:11 PM

Other folks have had theirs in mass bloom constantly! Mine gives me one bloom every once in a while...kind of like a game it plays with me  especially since when I had it in either of the two tanks where it's cool, it did nothing but blast the buds. Now that it's out where all the warm-growing stuff is I have better luck...a little ;)

playtime8978 03-27-2009 02:25 PM

Thats good to know, maybe yours will start to give you plentiful blooms now, if not, oh well they are still very lovely!

LauraN 03-28-2009 08:08 AM

Cool!
No pun intended ;)
