Suggestions for Easier OB Navigation

Has there been a particular problem you have run into while navigating the OB?

In order to make the OB as user-friendly as possible , I am posing this question to all members
to see if there is anything that needs or may need explanation to members especially
newbies ..
If you check out the forum- About The Board .. http://www.orchidboard.com/community/about-board/
A few stickys have been made as easy access answers to
some basic questions or difficulties that may arise in the use of the OB ..

For example -
Tips for posting photos on Orchidboard
Contacting Moderators or the Administrator
Difficulty in PMing or Emailing Another Member

I am looking to create and provide guidelines ONLY to members and would appreciate any suggestions.

(Disclaimer : The suggestions will be considered first between the moderators and the administration.
Please don't be upset if your suggestion is not acted upon.
We will do our best to accommodate all concerns but for any number of reasons, some suggestions may not be addressed.)
THank you! :)

Perfect timing! I do need your help with something.
How do you quote several people in one post? I've been opening multiple OB tabs and then copy pasting quotes into my post. It's not a very quick method. There must be an easier way. It will probably be something simple that I have been missing all along!

Feel free to move this question elsewhere if it doesn't belong in this thread. At the moment I don't have any suggestions, but I'll think about it Dorothy!

Dorothy 09-26-2008 01:15 PM

Camille - I am not aware of any shortcuts for that ..
I have seen that many answer each quote individually instead of combining them into one thread ..
Perhaps Sue knows ..

cb977 09-26-2008 02:39 PM

Sorry to say I think that's the only way to do it :(
If there is another way, I'm not aware of it. :scratchhead:

Ross 09-26-2008 02:43 PM

Well, you are allowed to cut and paste as Camille does it. Since this isn't a daily thing (it's not, right?) then perhaps that's the best way?

For now, it is...but Camille was wondering if there was an option to do it another way that she might have been missing ;)

camille1585 09-26-2008 02:47 PM

I was just wondering if that short cut existed here (I'm lazy!), since I have seen it on other forums. Underneath the post that is being written there are the previous posts listed (like in 'go advanced' here on OB) and next to each one you can click on 'quote' to add it to the post.
So everyone else who does it must have to do it manually like I do. It's not a big problem since I rarely do multi quote posts anyways!

RosieC 09-26-2008 03:22 PM

What does the 'Multi-Quote' option do?

I've just tried it and I think it is what you are looking for.
It's the icon next to the quote one with an image of like two pages. You press it on all the messages you want to quote, then press the quote button on any of the selected ones and it includes a quote of each one.

Or am I missing something in what you are trying to do?

Thank you Rosie! That's exactly what I was talking about!! :) I don't know why I never thought to try those icons. In fact, it never crossed my mind that they might have a purpose!

Dorothy 09-26-2008 04:09 PM

Thank you Rosie! :bowing
Nothing like learning from each other ..
and now I know better also!
At least this thread helped in some capacity :Tup:

s.kallima 09-26-2008 04:21 PM

I'm not sure this question would go in this thread ...

What about a searching tool that could show all the members growing one species ? (based on members's list)
To be more clear : I am looking for info on- i.e. Schoenorchis fragans- I would like to know all the members in OB who grow it, so I could send them a PM to ask specific questions (aside from creating a new post).
Is it possible ?

cb977 09-26-2008 04:23 PM

Yay, Rosie!!!

See? Even the mods get to learn stuff here :)

RosieC 09-26-2008 04:24 PM

No problem

I'm just a curious person and if there is an icon and I don't know what it does I hover over it to see the tooltip. I had seen this one and read the tooltip not long after I joined but I've never used it until I tried it earlier to see what happened. Glad I could help:D

What the OB provides is search option ..
Type in Schoenoorchis fragans into the dropdown field once you click on the Search option at the top of any page along the Forum Menu Taskbar .. It will bring up any past thread that mentions that orchid .. there you can find other members that have it ..
Your search can be more specific to a particular forum by going to that specific forum page.
Find the Search This Forum icon on the far right of the screen right across from Threads in Forum next to Forum Tools ..
Type in your keyword there ..

I don't believe there is a way that this forum can do what you are asking ..
Sue .. what do you think and know better than me on this one? :hmm

BikerDoc5968 09-26-2008 05:21 PM

Dorothy....I'm not a newbie but I always need help because I'm orchidly challanged!!!!! And I applaud your never-ending efforts to make this the best place in town...err the internet to visit and stay awhile. :bowing :bowing :bowing :bowing

Dorothy 09-26-2008 06:06 PM

You are very welcome, Doc :)

Sorry, Sue, I didn't mean to leave you out...'cause you're pretty special, too! And, yes, I have found just the kind of stuff us challenged people require to get us from one day to the next. This is how I get around the GH....it makes it easier to see that all the chids are be cared for properly.

Dorothy 09-26-2008 09:02 PM

I didn't think your greenhouse was that big!
Cute, Doc .. ;)

:rofl: That's exactly how we would get around in the greenhouse of a seed company where I did an internship 2 years ago! This was a small greenhouse by Dutch standards but the main corridor was 500 meters long, so we would use bikes to get around. We had some pretty bad rush hour traffic!

Awww, cut it out!

D and I are a team and she's really been an asset to our community. I'm very happy she accepted our invitation to become a mod here

Sandy4453 09-26-2008 09:31 PM

You people are so delightfully funny. Thank You.:bowing Great moderators and administration set the tone here and I've got to say that I hope things never change, that the bubble never bursts. You are all so awesome and are really, really, really the best board on the net.

P.S. Is that a suggestion? ooops...:sorry:

Jkelee 09-26-2008 09:39 PM

Hi ya's,
Maybe an off the wall question here, but does anyone else HAVE TO, hit the "back arrow" TWICE now on the OB, to get back to where you just were? As I've had to all week or so now. At my home and work computer.

It's just such a pain I guess. Hit the back arrow once, and get now where on here. Hit it twice, and she's back.

Sorry, just curious what's up with the OB? As now other website does this to me?

Here too Jkelee, just in the past week, it takes hitting the back button twice. It's like the remote for the t.v. not working right.

quiltergal 09-27-2008 12:23 AM

This isn't exactly a navigation suggestion, but I'm going to ask anyway.. Can we please have a spell check button next to the preview button when creating posts? In the wee hours spelling kind of disengages in my brain. It could save numerous edits.....at least for me anyway!

Oddly I do if I'm browsing from my work PC, but not when I'm browsing at home. I have a 'back' button on my mouse and I have exactly the same mouse at work and here at home but they behave differently from the two places.

I was browsing OB from work last night while I waited for my hubby to finish work (we both work in the same office but he was working late) and I got into the habbit of hitting back twice, then came home and carried on browsing and kept hitting back twice only to find it had gone back two pages.

Don't know what's going on there:scratchhead:

BikerDoc5968 09-27-2008 07:29 AM

Dorothy, the GH isn't that big but when you are orchidly challenged, even a few chids pose some major obsticles. CAmille, I don't have to worry about the traffic....'cause it's only me and the chids....my problem is that they all want to jump on and go for a ride with me...and you know how dangerous that could be say if one of them lost their footing err rooting and fell...OMG

Terri, if you've got Internet Explorer, you can download this spell checker which will be downloaded in the "tools" section of IE. ieSpell - Spell Checker add-on for Internet Explorer

I thought you were kidding but maybe that really is your bike? Did you build it? came that way? how many gears?

Sorry to get off the subject but I do have a question...how do you...add a picture from a reply status box? A pic from your gallery, not your picture file in the hard drive. I looked all over for an icon in my gallery but couldn't find one. I'm sure it's right in front of me.:hmm

Hi Swamper :waving

When you open one of your gallery photos, look underneath the photo (in the Photo Details box) and you'll see "Linked Thumbnail". Do a copy-and-paste from there :)

Swamper 09-27-2008 10:05 AM

thanks I knew it was right in front of me

BikerDoc5968 09-27-2008 10:26 AM

Swamper, it is just for fun....a thing with the "BIG D" I walk, talk and can crawl on my belly, too!

Swamper 09-27-2008 12:45 PM

I thought since you are a "biker" doc that maybe you had some cool bikes around.

JackiBlu 09-27-2008 01:10 PM

Suggestion: A Library?

Not so much of a how to, but keeping an easily accessible library of 'facts as we know them' to other resources that work sometimes:

Say to have an area for the subjects that become 'stickied' but when there is an update/new info to add to that sticky.. Sorta like a library

Such as a lead/general 'sheet' for sign of sick/diseased orchids to help for them, but could become specific for a/the species under each species if when necessary.

Same as from basic growing habits etc.. and what to expect when to splitting/reproduction etc.. In searches we find stuff scattered everywhere.. and maybe just a couple lines of a post could be brought forward to be added to a sticky. It will probably be a huge undertaking, or could be begin now.

All the the stuff on s/h is very interesting for me.. but I am not knowledgeable enough yet to even think about that.. but say a year or two down the road I may want to get adventurous and all the precious info may be gone.

I don't think I"m making myself very clear.. but I hope I am not mucking up what you requested.

Dorothy 09-27-2008 06:37 PM

All I was looking to create are guides to help members out to navigate the board ..
JackiBlu - That would take a great undertaking, indeed! Personally, I just don't have the time to put into doing something that extensive especially since moderating is done voluntarily ..
As far as the back button ..?? I can't help you there .. as I open up separate windows to view threads so I rarely use the back button in that manner..

For the folks who are just catching this thread now and haven't read the first post, I've quoted it here.

Dorothy was kind enough to offer assistance for members who might have a hard time maneuvering around the board...just the way it is. ;)

We're not recreating the format of Orchidboard...it works just fine :cheer:

camille1585 09-28-2008 07:33 AM

I think there already has been alot of work done to make the forum user friendly. I like all those useful stickies in the 'about OB' forum. I am trying to think back to when I joined OB, and remember what I had trouble with. For now, all I remember is that I had trouble finding the care sheets! It never occured to me to look in 'member articles'. Maybe there could be a sticky to get to them, or they could be added to the quick links?
