Cattleya quadricolor on a tree

Here's Cattleya quadricolor growing on a tree. Notice the almost horizontal growing habit of the plant. When the flowers are born, they keep facing the ground because of that kind of growing. The third photo shows an opportunist white spider. All the flowers have one of these. They keep mounted on the tip of the column, almost invisible, and just wait.

Wow! So cool, Mauro. The flowers look gorgeous in situ like that. And, I have to say, as much as I don't like spiders, isn't mother nature just so incredibly amazing??!!

Mauro,

Very beautiful...and informative! The spider is cool! :yikes: Is this species of cattleya endemic to your area of Brazil?

Awesome, like Roly said, it looks even more incredible on that tree. I love those tree mounts.Has yours been on that tree long? Are the roots grabbed on all over the place. I d love to see pics of the roots where they are actually grabbing on. Beautiful!!!

One of my biggest weaknesses is in situ orchids. And if you throw in the bonus of some wild fauna, I'm a total gonner. Home run, Mauro!

Wow thats beautiful, seeing the cattleya so happy in its natural environment- that spider is a sneaky thing, knows how to get itself a good meal... :)

No, Dgenovese, it is a Colombian species.

The roots are firmly grabbing the trunk, Swamper. It is impossible to take this plant off without breaking the rhizoma. I'll take a few pictures next weekend (if I didn't forget:))

I mounted three adult pseudo bulbs three years ago. The plant liked very much and branched several times forming a small bush.

Thanks for the info Mauro...I'm always thinking about where species are growing naturally, and this guy looks so well naturalized I thought it may be from your area. You've grown it very well indeed! :bowing

Beautiful cattleya, Mauro! I too have crab spiders, but they're each occupying a flower on the orange jasmine that's in bloom on my deck right now instead of the orchids. Congratulations on your wonderful quadricolor.

Steve
