ooooooooh so pretty! How many do you have?

bonsai1504 07-16-2008 11:07 AM

last time i counted i have 17 goldfish and 6 koi. i used to have more including a fifty-dollar butterfly koi until a heron came! poor fishes i bet some of them died from shock.

Swamper 07-16-2008 12:39 PM

It looks like you have some guppies in there too

bonsai1504 07-16-2008 12:42 PM

those are mosquito fish. they eat the mosquito larva that get into the pond. also they multiply fast. i started out with four last year and now i have about 30!

Bird Song Farm 07-16-2008 12:47 PM

Yep, I noticed the guppies too. They do a great job with the mosquitoes!
Loved the story about the Butterfly Koi, had much the same happen with a salt water aquarium once.........lost one expensive Butterfly fish to a very large anemone!

i went to one pond yesterday that had an electric fence around the pond to keep the herons out.

I love your fish. Your set up looks great. I recently purchased a small preformed 3' x 4' irregular shaped pond shell with a one level waterfall at a yard sale. The pump was not included. My pond project may not kick off till next year as I have many things to consider before installing it such as location, light, theme, and appropriate plants and inhabitants for such a small space. It will probably need to be extended. How large is your pond and have you had any luck with a smaller scaled version? You did a fantastic job!

bonsai1504 07-21-2008 10:51 AM

we have a smaller preformed one like you described in the front yard and the one in the back yard has the soft rubber liner and is 700 gallons. also, more frogs will come!

this website has a forum so ask any pond questions if you have them.
