Asahiden: Attachment 14400 Hakuun: Attachment 14401 Tamakongo: Attachment 14402 There are lots more to come!!! |
Wow! keep em coming!
|
Nice babies.
|
|
Wow! Yours look so much more open than mine. Nice job.
|
Shannen, you're doing a wonderful job with these chids!
Very very nice! :bowing |
Thanks, guys! Ross, do you have a close up of your flowers? These have been opening since last week, so you just may need to give your's some time.
Here's another one that smells divine - kinda with vanilla overtones. Awaharibeni: http://www.orchidboard.com/community...waharibeni.jpg |
Wow! You have some beautiful bloomers! You must be in Neo heaven right now! Thanks for posting those pics. Now I have an idea of what the different varieties look like.
|
I can't take credit for any of these blooms... they were in bud and starting to open when I brought them home. There are lots more with spikes - so there should be lots more photos to take!
Glad you are enjoying them! |

Thanks, Ross. It looks like you just need a few more days and they should start to recurve back and really open up. I see one in the photo that is nearly there... the others should follow along shortly. Keep us posted! (And you should get more scent when they do... though I have found that some plants have a scent all of the time, others the scent is barely there - even of the same variety.)
|
Those are really beautiful, Shannon, WELL DONE!!!
|
Shannon
WOW,they are fantastic. I only wish we could see them in person. They always are much nicer than even the pictures show. How many neos do you have now? How have you potted them? Are they the traditional method of potting? Marilyn |
Thanks for the lovely photos, Shannen. It's really nice to see the different varieties to compare. Looks as though they're enjoying life at your house!
Ross, Your's is a real beauty too. Nice going! :) |
Thanks everyone! And yes, Shirley, you are very right - I am really enjoying sharing my house with these babies! I just counted and there are at least 12 more with spikes and buds that will flower soon, so there's gonna be more photos to come! I'm also really loving the fact that I can study the different kinds in detail - comparing growth and scent and form. Its like heaven!!
Marilyn, I only have a few plants of my own, however, I was left with quite a few after Tatton Park Orchid Show as Glenn couldn't take them back to the US with him. So I'm looking after them for him! My own plants are in Erin pots - or will be shortly when my next order from Vic arrives this week! Not quite tradition, but all of them are in sphag - I love growing things in sphag, it works really well for me. Here's a pic of a couple of mine: http://www.orchidboard.com/community.../Neo_group.jpg Left to right: Isun Hime, Gyokusuiden, Kyokko |
They looks so nice, yet they're so small!! How can you smell anything from that little tiny flower?!? I'm so curious!!! waiting for mine to bloom just so i can check them out for REAL!!!
|
Some more blooms...

Blackorchid... you would be surprised how much fragrance these little flowers can have. Some are definitely more fragrant than others, but the ones that are really fragrant can fill the room with their scent.

Fragrance seems to be very variable - even with the same 'variety'... some have been quite strongly scented, others had only faint or no scent. I've been lucky, and even the hybrid that I have flowering has at least some scent - though that one is not very strong, you have to get your nose right into it.
The photo above of Hakuhou Fukurin was taken today. The flowers on that one opened on 10th July. (And this plant has been taken to the local Orchid Society meeting and back again, with the corresponding changes in temp/humidity/etc.) I'll let you know how long these last! |
I like the "trailing tails" if you will. The only other ones I've seen is in one of the OB's projects. I also love the little bonsai type pots they are in. (So does my wife). I guess from the thread that they are grown inside, under lights and high humidity?? Ross - I like the pinkish coloring in yours. Nice pictures. Thanks.
|
Oooh.... I'm hopeing for good luck. I ordered one from Oak Hill Gardens. It's a tiny 5" plant. Hope they smell just as good as yours do.
Thanks for the info! |
Blackorchid, Good luck with your plant! 5" is a good sized plant for these miniatures, so it shouldn't be too long before you see blooms.
Don, my plants are grown inside on a windowsill, no additional light. I know of some growers in the US in areas that don't get really cold winters that grow them outside year 'round. |
Hi shakkai,
Pretty blooms! Do you have any pics of your grow area? I have mine on a windowsill too but I do supplement with fluorescents from noon to dark. I think you said you use Green Jungle fertilizer? How much do you mix with and how often have you fertilized so far? |
I don't have any photos at the moment with a good overview of the area, but I'll try to get some and post them later this week.
I have followed the directions on the bottle of Green Jungle (2 tablespoons per gallon) and I use it with (almost) every watering - so at the moment, misting daily or every other day, and once a week dunkings. Jungle Green is pre-mixed at a concentration of 1-0-1 + trace elements as a complete feed designed for rain, distilled, and RO water. |
Still no decent photos of my 'windowsills'... too busy watering everything! But one more Neo has started to flower.
This is Toukou: http://static.flickr.com/3121/272833...03515916_d.jpg http://static.flickr.com/3128/272915...3ed75f26_d.jpg Just 4 little flowers (3 of which are open) and the fragrance is already noticeable as I walk by it. Smells like pina colada - what a great summer fragrance! |
Shannan - Delicate little beauties!
Mmmm pina colada! I love the first shot .. it's like they are shooting star coming right at you! Look out! |
Gawd, I love all these photos!
Soooo cool that we can see the different varieties in bloom!!! Thanks so much for posting these!!!!! Pina colada. . .OMG! YUM! |
Thanks guys! With beautiful flowers like this, its easy to take pretty pictures!
I just wish everyone could smell the fragrance too! Its picking up more of a note of coconut now... |

OK, I finally got a quick shot of my window shelf:
|
Yay! Thanks for posting a pic of your grow area, Shakkai! Looks very nice. What's the tora-fu one you have near the middle? Did Glenn leave you any bean leaf ones?
|
Hi Lin, thanks very much! The yellow tiger stripe one is a Hanagoromo - you mean that one? Its gotten much better colouring being right next to the window.
Yes, Glenn left some bean leaf ones - I just haven't bought any yet for my own collection. Thinking about Suikuden, though.... any recommendations? |

Ah, Hanagoromo is a beauty! I think you should go for Suikaden. It has nice, consistent growth. I got mine as a multigrowth about 2 months ago and since then it's pushed out 9 or 10 new roots and 3 new growths (most likely fans). Mine doesn't look like it's ever bloomed before because I examined it closely and no old spikes from any leaf bases. From what I remember, you're a fan of variegation too (like me) so how about Kinkujaku (variegated bean leaf)?
Here's a pic of my Suikaden and Kinkujaku. Sorry for the blurriness, my camera sucks. I don't think you'll regret these Shakkai. Take the plunge! |
Really lovely! Is that a Kisyu Sekko in the background there? That's the other tiger stripe that I have.
Yes, I'm in love with the variegated ones... probably too late to add the Kinkujaku this year, Glenn is already on his way to the UK with more plants! But I'll be posting in a couple of days about my newest additions! |
Thanks shakkai...nope, I don't have Kisyu Sekko. My tiger stripe in the background is Setsuzan. It's also been a good grower for me. Each spike has only 3 or 4 buds but it's been nice enough to give me 3 spikes plus 2 more emerging.
What!? Glenn's gonna leave more neos in your care? You lucky girl:lol: Can't wait to see the new family members... |
Ah, Setsuzan... yes, that is on my list to get.
I've seen quite a lot of interest in Neos (and other Japanese orchids) and the more varieties available here, the more interest there seems to be... its a fantastic thing, I think, and anything that I can do to help that I will do. (Yes, I'm one lucky girl!!) Hopefully, these will be the new family members: Seiryujishi, Hoshiguruma, Syunkyuden, Taiyoden, and Tosabeni. |
Shannon, in the picture you took of the windowsill, what is that one mounted orchid that looks all fuzzy? My first thought was SNOW MOLD! But then I realized that one is supposed to look like that (I think?). I am just obsessed with my own battles so I assume everyone has them! So...what is that intriguing plant?
|
That's my Den. senile... and yes, its covered in little white hairs all over the leaves and stem! Very cool plant!
|
Shakkai,
I've never heard of Syunkyuden, what does that one look like? I have heard of one called Shunkyuden though, it's the one with the peloric flowers. I have both Shunkyuden and Hoshiguruma. I've never seen Tosabeni either so very curious about what that one is like. Was it you who was looking for a copy of the Orchid Digest with the neo article from 2006? I can't remember who was asking about it..... |
Shakkai,
Are you going to add lights for them in the winter?? My last winter here in MN....was blah! I think I had 5 sunny days the whole season. Do you know how much light you get through that window? Ever measured it with a light meter? I'm so worried about mine not getting enough light next winter and not growing/blooming properly next season... |
