Unpopular Opinion - Flowers that you hate
I'm starting this thread because I think Cattleya dowiana var rosita is ugly and for some reason needed to tell someone. I think its because I love the tipo variety so much.
Anyway, does anyone else have a flower they hate that others seem to love / willing to pay big $$ for? Cheers! |
This was inspired by the SVO list that just came out, maybe? Sure, I can play. Thanks for creating a safe space for some orchid trash talk.
I think most Dendrobiums are booooooriiiiiing and many are ugggllyyyy Most Phalaenopsis too. What's the point? Might as well grow forget-me-nots, the flowers are prettier. Don't get me started on Phragmipediums. Total waste of space in an orchid collection. Brassavola nodosa...LAMEST most overrated orchid in the world Bifoliate Cattleyas...no thank you The recent 'coerulea' craze... Some might like gray flowers, but I'll pass! Blue my arse! |
I'm kind of different. I think every flower is fascinating, including grass. I even like algae and lichens.
|
I'm contrarian in the other direction... I tend to be especially fond of the weird little things that only a mother could love, don't get quite as excited about the showy ones though I certainly like those too. Can't think of any orchid that I dislike.
|
Im not a fan of pelorics of really any of the splash petals. Guess my love of orchids is rooted in their ecological interest. Even though I almost exclusively grow species I am aware how line bred they all are....not exactly wild creatures anymore...

I will admit to not really liking green flowers!
I've tried a green Cym = No I've got a seedling Rlc Yen Corona 'Green Genie'. I only purchased it to round out an order and so I could say I had tried a couple of green blooms. Still waiting for this to bloom. I'm afraid I just don't understand the fascination with blooms that look the same as leaves! |
Not really hate but can anyone help me understand why this Paphiopedilum won. I dont understand the appeal. And I’m sure there are other orchids more deserving of the award

I cannot say there is an orchid I “hate”, but I do have a well-developed sense of “eh…”.
I find most dendrobiums are boring, as are most alba “anythings”. For me, green takes a close second to white. Phals can be boring unless they have striking or unusual coloration or patterns. |

I love Paphs. and consider myself a Paph. specialist.
However, even though I’ve grown and bloomed it in the past I cannot find a warm spot in my heart for Paph. charlesworthii. |
I don't hate or dislike any plant, as I see them as wonders of nature. Like others said, some of them are boring. I prefer species or primary hybrids, especially those that are wierd and hard to find.

hmmm, this thread is bringing out the best in all of us!! :bowing
so even tho we have a proverbial boatload of generic grocery store phals (and as beginners, NOIDs are our jam!), i hate them. yes, you can find something cool about some of them, and there are some unique characteristics, but besides not liking the flowers i don't like what they've done to the orchid market. you could argue grocery noids have exposed more people to orchids, but i would provide other arguments against. otherwise so far the only orchid i really disliked was one where the colours on the flower did not play well. some colours are not meant to go together...thats nature, not my rule. love this thread tho! and on that paph award, the flower count is great and the uniformity in height, form, and color is pretty good from what you can see in the picture. im no judge, but as a paph nerd im biased. |

I would never say I hate anything but I frequently say I would never acquire something.
I'm with the species lovers. |
I'm in!
I'll concur with a lot already mentioned like phal's, paph's (except philippenense who I'm mad at right now because it's apparently decided to take a year off), peloric's. I've actually decided I'm not a big fan of vanda's unless they are species even though that tends to make them less colorful than their manually manipulated cousins. I actually like phrags because of the successive blooms and I am starting to find an appreciation for certain dendrobiums. I like my speciosum and spectabile but the clock is ticking on how many more times they'll get schlepped to a show due to the size and weight. I bought an amethystoglossum 2 years ago and I'm counting 14 spikes right now. And it's not a very big plant. I can't wait to see it. I've decided in my old age that a plant has to have something very unique about it for me to get excited about it and want one and in nearly every instance, it will be a species. |
