Cymbidium FiFi repot?
3 or 5 gallon bucket? Im thinking a metal washtub. One of those hempvana mesh grow bags? Its in a concrete planter I cant move around so its got to be a repot. 8 new bulbs and Im sure roots all over. Ive got to lighten it up for being mobile ya know :)
https://photos.smugmug.com/Carmelas/...%5B1%5D-X2.jpg next to a 5 gallon bucket for perspective. :bowing https://photos.smugmug.com/Carmelas/...%5B1%5D-X2.jpg and since someone else has already claimed to inform us 1st if they ever get a warm growing cym to bloom I guess Ill be 2nd... |
Can't advise on going larger... I whack mine down when they get above 2 gallons, can't lift them beyod that. If you wanted to divide this beast, get out the Sawzall...Then you have MORE of them!
Does have a fighting chance of bloomoing.... Fifi is half maddidum. Which also contributes to the bulk, however. |
divide is not a bad idea. divide and conquer :)
I checked and there's 9 new bulbs could be split 4 and 5. in one year be back to where I'm at now...Maybe a quad split. Go ahead and plant it in wheelbarrow :) thanks!! :bowing |
Likely it could use it anyway. Minimum 3 pbulbs in a division 5 is better
|
The bag would work well with your humidity. I think the handles are sturdy.
|
I vote for the wheelbarrow! Definitely.
|
Im still looking ...I really kind of like it big and bold. Just needs some beautiful flowers to go with the big and bold.
hmmmm might go porch size decorator pot and drill bunches of holes in it for snails to roost. Then pick em snails off one by one in the little holes :) I can use the Cymbidium for snail bait.. |
Big and bold is the best way to go in your climate! Used to have a couple of them back in the day when I grew in the Batcave...
This one became my first kitchen wastebasket Cymb... http://www.orchidboard.com/community...astebasket.jpg Followed by this one... http://www.orchidboard.com/community...dium/Cym22.JPG http://www.orchidboard.com/community...dium/Cym31.JPG Sadly, I only have a couple of very small Cymbs now since starting to grow in a different space. That yellow one would be in a wheelbarrow in my yard if I'd had a place to winter it. |

Looked too good to be chopd up. I couldnt do it  |
I most wholeheartedly approve! :bowing When the time comes, using one of those 15 gallon plastic storage totes will work as well.

4 more new bulbs growing. one of these days before I get too old its going to show me some flowers!!! :bowing |
When I have seen this hybrid at shows (I don't own one, with good reason) they have tended to be enormous. So may need to get even bigger! Here's hoping that you're getting close! It looks quite happy. Looked up its award history to guess bloom time. Suspect the April/May timeframe, could be earlier, though, I think that the one I saw at our local show years back was in February.
|
If you do decide to go bigger, my dad used whiskey/whisky barrel halves.
Edit: probably wine barrels since we're in California. |
Headed toward a wheelbarrow...Yes!

Fifi has babies
Those new growths were spikes.Fifi has babies.
Formed 3 growing spikes and broke one moving it before I knew it was a spike :( https://photos.smugmug.com/Orchid-in...MG_7388-X2.jpg https://photos.smugmug.com/Orchid-in...MG_7387-X2.jpg https://photos.smugmug.com/Orchid-in...MG_7386-X2.jpg WE wait for the show now!!:waving this make me sad it got brokem:(( https://photos.smugmug.com/Orchid-in...MG_7389-X2.jpg |
Congratulations!
That spike is the beefiest spike I’ve ever seen on an orchid. Wow! |
RJSquirrel, you have an amazing climate for orchids or you are a magician! Probably the latter.
I almost wish I lived in the US... |
I have a hogwarts wand I keep handy.
Texas isnt all bad in fact its rather inviting for most orchids. About 3 months out of the year (with ni growhouse or greenhouse) you have to molly coddle them outside to inside to outside. But I thinks overall its been rather selfishly rewarding :) like its going to freeze maybe outside so got to drag this in . its getting a bit much for an old man with cats that are of no help. strap some harness's on them and make em useful  |

Fifi n her babies getting some sun. about 55 outside right now. snows almost melted. It still gonna freeze tonite so Fifi has to come back in. What a drag... |
She's looking good! The anticipation builds...

getting down to the 40's again. been outside since snowmaggedon. :). May have to bring it into the garage. I dont want to be able to blame any problems on the cold. |
Wow, that is coming along nicely. I can't wait to see those blooms open.
|
all in all being a warm tolerant cymbidium there is not a whole lot of variation of yellow. it may have some light red spotting on the lip from what I can see from a few blasted ones. :)
we shall see in protect mode. its been crazy weather even for Texas, just plain crazy. |

https://photos.smugmug.com/Cymbidium...%5B1%5D-X2.jpg 1 flower and about 40 more to go. This one opened up in the middle so Im guessing the rest are overdue. A nice yellow flower with a green backside, neatly sprinkled with a red splash of color on the lip. I don't think it's been warm enough for these to get the message clearly. The weather has been bouncing and we going to bounce one more time next week into the 40's. I hope they get the message soon. |
