I had a great time, she is so nice and helpful. The greenhous is PACKED with everything imaginable, with another smaller greenhouse with only phal plants. Everything is 50 % off.

Vandas, potted or mounted, lots of other mounted plants, many unusual varieties. You name it and she possibly has it.

Don't judge her stock by the web site. The site is very old. The trip is well worth it but she is difficult to find. It is way out in the country and the roads are not marked well. I followed MapQuest, and had no problem, but I was surprised that it was so far out.

Nice haul! Thanks for the tip on location.

gmdiaz 05-02-2008 09:45 AM

Oh BOY! What a great haul!

I know you just had the nicest day! I wish I could have gone with you!

Ya done good, Marilyn!!!

I wish the sale was also on the site, I'd get a few for sure :)

GreggC 05-02-2008 10:08 AM

On the 9th, I'm there!!

We are going up to Kalamazoo area to visit relatives as we do quite frequently. It is a real bummer that they won't be there after June. :_( It was a trek over every time we visited. They really have some nice stuff.

Grandma M 05-02-2008 10:13 AM

Ross, I was expecting you to be there yesterday. I would have been nice to meet you.

It is well worth the trip.
I took 96 to Ionia exit (66), to 43/50 (N. Clinton Trail), to Vermontville Hyw., to Otto Rd, to Glass Dr. Her place is a bit north of Charlott. There are no markers directing you to the greenhouse.

If you want to go to Porters, take the Grand Ledge exit or, I think, you can take Vermontville Hwy East to Potterville, then North on 43. Porters site has a good map.

Good luck. I'm sure you will find something you want at 50% off. My checkbook told me I needed to stop at 10 plants.:(( :bua:

Were you given that

discount when you went? I was under the impression that they weren't going to sell them that cheap until June 28th.

That was my understanding as well. But I plan to e-mail them and ask.

Grandma M 05-02-2008 04:20 PM

YES, the sale is on now. I got 50% off everything I bought. She also told me she mails packages. You really need to decide what type of plant you are interested in and then send her an e-mail. I did that. She sent me an e-mail back telling me what she had and set them aside until I got there.

That greenhouse was so packed with plants. She has a lot of mounted plants, from tiny to huge. I could have spent hours there but I was with a friend who couldn't care less about orchids, but did enjoy seeing them. I didn't want to push my luck too far with her in case I want to go back again. I feel that it was well worth the trip there. The bark pole I bought is over 19 inches long and the original price on it was 70.00 I paid 35.00.

She imports her Vanda Alliance plants and has many unusual colors. If I had room, I would have bought several but my vanda area is full.

I sound like a broken record, but I was very much impressed with the selection, qualilty and service.....and the 50% off.

It's soooo sad when orchid farms go out of business... I remember this one where I grew up, went out of business after 57 years ;( Some of my best memories. Walking through a 200 foot long 30 feet wide (multiple rows) of blooming cattleyas... some things you can never forget :(

I dropped them an email to ask if they'd ship.

Roy 05-03-2008 12:45 AM

You have done very well Marilyn, excellent looking plants.

Did you get to Green Acres? Did you find anything you just had to have?

Marilyn

GreggC 05-15-2008 12:53 PM

Did you EVER go orchid shopping and NOT find anything?

Actually, I bought 21 orchids. Mostly Laeliocattleyas and Brassolaeliacattleyas. I did buy a calanthe, a bulbophyllum and an Encyclia. I may go back again before it is over.

Grandma M 05-15-2008 06:55 PM

That's great Greg. Were they all 50% off? Please post some pics of your new orchids.

I would love to go back again. I really would love to get some of her vandas. I have a problem........where would I put them? I would need to go back to Lowes and buy some more pipe to build myself another rack to hang them on. It also would mean moving the phrag plants from a 22" X 48" tray somewhere else. They would need to be short phrags to fit where I have extra space for them. Unfortunately most of my phrags are not short once they set bud.

I will be going through some tests next week to confirm if I have Parkensons Disease. My vandas are all in my basement. I was told yesterday that I MUST walk with a walker rather than a cane, which I use now. I have a cane at the top of the steps and one at the bottom to use when I get there. A walker would really complicate my life. What the tests show, and what restrictions may be put on me, could limit my trips to the basement every morning to drench them. I have already been taken to the hospital three times because of falls. Twice I landed on my face and the last time I crushed some vertebra. How long is my luck going to last for growing orchids?

I happen to be a very determined and strongly independent person but how long will determination continue to let me do what I wish to do?

Most of them were 50% off

but there were quite a few that she would not sell. I think they might be earmarked for folks that she knows that are in the business. I asked he about a specimen plant, but she didn't act too eager to sell one. I will be some time in posting any pics--all but one of mine were not in bloom.

Off topic, sorry... Marilyn, there are lifts that install along side of stairs - not too expensive like elevators. I would hate to see one deprived of enjoying the orchids

GreggC 05-15-2008 07:38 PM

I am sorry to hear of your plight

Marilyn. Hopefully, you can get something worked out. I hope they can figure something out for you so that you may enjoy our special friends.:)
