It's fascinating the Prosthechea is so absolutely dominant in almost all the characteristics.

DirtyCoconuts 03-23-2023 09:49 AM

just the color is guar.

i like it!

Leafmite 03-23-2023 04:02 PM

That will be so pretty when all the blooms are open together! Very nice!

Fantastic plant! What category or family does this orchid fall into? Cattleya? I have never heard of either name, so very new to me. The base of the plants look like oncididiums to me.

Roberta 03-23-2023 05:33 PM

Cattleya alliance. Guarianthe (Cattleya) bowringiana x Prosthechea (Encyclia) cochleata . Just genus name changes to make one crazy...

its a little overdue. skipped one bloom cycle bec I broke the spike. Had to save it from the storm last night brought it in and still got buds and a flower didnt get knocked off..

https://photos.smugmug.com/Diamonds/...%5B1%5D-X2.jpg

the 1st flower. has 2 spikes and as you can see spike growing off a spike, that makes 3. Its starting to get warm and these should open fast. Plants buried up to its bulbs in sphagnum tightly packed. I will have to break the container to get it out if I want to re pot.

thanks for looking again and wonderful blooms for you all too!!! :bowing

I have a small one. People who want to grow it need to remember it's almost a bog plant. If you let it get dry between waterings it will sit there indefinitely, looking unhappy, without growing. I couldn't grow this in bark unless I watered every day.

RJSquirrel 04-10-2024 09:27 PM

Good point that these are about as bog orchid as you get without the scent of the bog. :)

You can call it goopy. Hot humid and goopy. Was under 70% shade cloth last year. Going to try 50% this season for a while. See how the leaves look next month. Move it under a bench or behind some more cloth.
It's a full morning sun, afternoon can burn it. As much shade as it can get under the hottest days. Think like a bog. We see how this does after being battered last night. Just glad the hail didn't hit me plants!!!

A Peter T Lin plant too so that always helps getting a good start. He hasn't had these lately. I wanted another one just in case ya know..Thanks!!:bowing

a few more open. these are fragrant also. not as strong as the radiata but the same scent.

Very jealous!

I've wanted one of these but I think I'm at my capacity for plants until I can automate some things and I'm not planning and playing for a wedding.

EDIT: Why does it smell like, if it has a scent?

RJSquirrel 04-23-2024 08:56 PM

smells like honey :) very sweet. not very strong but its there.

Dalachin 04-23-2024 09:22 PM

Nice! I want one of these!

RJSquirrel 04-24-2024 01:13 AM

JL orchids has a few and hmmm Orchid Designs has some also. They start about 50 bucks.

Act now avoid future disappointment and regret !!!

I hope all these buds open up. You might have time to catch up ya know...:bowing

I bought mine from the place that must not be mentioned because I couldn't find it elsewhere. It was in a 2"/5cm pot.

I didn't realize how much water it needed. For over a year I let it dry between waterings. It sat there and didn't grow, but it didn't die, either. Once I moved it to a larger container with the S/H method it took off. I hope it flowers this summer.

I likewise struggled with Prosthechea/Anacheilium cochleata/um, fragrans, radiata/um.

I gradually figured out these Anacheilium/Prosthechea need to be quite wet to grow at all.

Dalachin 04-24-2024 12:11 PM

Hmmmm.... such enablers. I've been eyeing a Lycaste hybrid that only the Vendor Who Must Not Be Named had... so i got that and the Guarechea. Hoping that I'm one of their success stories.

RJSquirrel 04-24-2024 05:41 PM

I think the bulbs on the these have to stay fat and plump to bloom. If they get wrinkly at all you won't get any flowers, or they be crunched and don't survive the push thru the sheath.

heh yeh I see the unamed one has his own version he introduced. poor guy cant even get a back handed mention :). Im going to name my next kitty cat in his honor.

Dalachin 04-24-2024 10:51 PM

It’s a perfectly reasonable name under any other contexts.
