Strange leaf spots on vanda pr. mikassa
2 Attachment(s)
Saw these odd spots today. This vanda has been mistreated for a while. No fert and bad watering. Are these spots caused by an infection or a nutrition problem? Plant has also been sunburned severly
sorry for the photo quality. Didn't had a camera at hand. |
The large marks look like a sun burn... are you talking about the tiny dots? My Vanda and Ascocenda get these. I've seen them on Vandas and Ascocendas at orchids shows too. Not sure what they are but they don't seem to be harmful or deter growth.

Got the tiny spots myself as well and everything goes fine. Its really about the large brown stripe like spots.
Ive heard of viral infections giving the same symptoms thats why I wonder. The plant started dropping lower leafs in a rapid rate until now. If its sunburn then everything is fine, if its viral I wish my friend a good luck. |
The questioned mark is burn from either light or a cold chill. The spotting can come from the parents. I think the plant is an Ascocenda, not a Vanda also by the name. The spotting comes thru in some hybrids if Ascocentrum curvifolium is in the parentage ( & others)

I am now certain its a cold chill. Since you cleared it up being a asconcenda I now understand what happend to it. Thank you very much. |
If the plant is Ascocenda Princess Mikassa, the flowers are nearly the same size as a regular Vanda, 3 1/2 - 4 inch ( 90 - 100 mm ) depending on culture. What size were the flowers on your plant please.

Just thinking your plant may also be Ascda. John De Biase 'Blue'. This a common plant sold around the world.
|
That just might be. It didn't came from a special place or anything like that. Just a garden centre. They had a whole load of vanda's that just came in and this was one of them. Too bad it never bloomed again after it dropped its flowers. i told my friend to bring it over at my place and I would took care of it and get it to spike.
He wants to try it himself. Do you have any photo of the plant you have in mind Roy?? Ill look on the net in the meanwhile trying to spare you the trouble. |

Is this plant a heavy drinker or somewhat dryer? |
Vandas / Ascdas from my experience like a good drink every day in the summer but dry out at nite. Humidity should be high if possible, never dry air. I water once every 2 or 3 days in the winter even though my plants are kept warm, its not as warm as in the tropics at nite by a long way but the plants don't seem to mind if they are kept on the dry side.
