The Miniature of miniatures

Here are some in situ pics of Bulbophylllum minutissimum. One of the smallest orchids in the world (probably the smallest). Pseudobulbs measureing 3 millimetres across. I found this orchid by accident :) Its not really something that's easy to look for. See if you can see the flowers.

Wow, that almost hurts the eyeballs. I think I saw some in the first pic. Not the second....still all buds. Am I right? :)

DelawareJim 04-20-2008 08:18 AM

If I'm seeing correctly, there are 2 flowers at about 12:00 and 5:00 on the right half of the first picture, and two almost side-by-side at about 1:00 and 2:00 in the second?

That is absolutely amazing!

Cheers.
Jim

My, my, my, those are tiny! Think I spotted the flowers........

OrchidLover1982 04-21-2008 06:06 AM

I can count 4 flowers in the first pic and 2 in the second pic. Small single reddish coloured flower about the same size as the pseudobulbs.

When i say bulbs 3 millimetres across that is maximum. some are smaller. When they are in the sun they turn a reddish colour like the flowers but when they are a bit more shady the bulbs are green. These ones were in a very sunny position growing on mangroves. I have also seen this species growing on rocks once with a thin layer of moss.

Anybody have a source for these in the US? I would love to grow some of that out. I also hear that they do well in the vivarium.

is,n,t nature wonderfull?
my eyes are still hurting from staring.

Tindomul 05-15-2008 06:09 PM

Very cool. This is exactly why Bulbophyllum is one of my most favorite of generas across all life forms.

Chubidubi 05-15-2008 08:02 PM

AWESOME...but I think I went blind for a moment trying to spot the flowers

Bolero 05-16-2008 06:01 AM

Amazing, I've heard of that plant but never seen a photo of it. Thanks for sharing something a bit special.

Hi Orchid Lover

I also have this strange little bulbophyllum. I don't think there are too many around cos nobody seems to have heard of them. Mine was a freebie which was rescued by a guy in another Orchid Club. Apparently they grow in mangrove areas, amongst other places, which I guess means they like moisture and humidity. I think we were told it was the 3rd smallest orchid in the world. Couldn't imagine what the smallest must look like. That is a great
:photo: by the way.

:goodluck:

WOW, thats tiny, cute, but tiny, too tiny.

OrchidLover1982 08-03-2008 05:43 PM

I honestly would like to see an orchid that is smaller than this. I don't think there is one. lol. I measured the pseudobulbs and they average 2 millimetres across. I did a search on google for the smallest orchid and nothing came close to being this small as a plant. I'm sure there are orchids out there with smaller flowers. i have one Oberonia here with much smaller flowers (you can hardly see the flowers) but as a plant i would like to see something smaller than 2mm across. You might needs to get a microscope to see it.

Here's another one this size, Platystele stenostachya:IOSPE PHOTOS
I have a book that shows the flower of this one resting comfortably on Roosevelt's nose (on the U.S. dime).

Bulbophyllum minutissimum specimen

Here is a pic of a specimen plant next to a match stick just for size comparison. You can see how small these pseudobulbs are. Its hard to even believe that its an orchid, lol.

enjoy.

Tom_in_PA 08-10-2008 07:00 PM

wish I could find this one in the states!

Ross 08-10-2008 07:04 PM

The match? Or the stuff to the right?

Dorothy 08-10-2008 07:40 PM

Thought I would throw this past thread in here since it mentions Bulbophyllum minutissimum -

Tom_in_PA 08-10-2008 07:50 PM

either Ross

unhappykat 08-10-2008 09:56 PM

Yup, that is really tiny. If I was to encounter that in nature I would suspect it to be a disease on a tree rather than an orchid. great now I want one!

CoolPhrog 08-12-2008 04:24 PM

Hey Dorothy, any idea where I can get one of these?

Dorothy 08-12-2008 04:55 PM

Contact andy83 .. as from the thread I posted earlier .. he did purchase one this past June ..
I can't remember where I saw this one .. :duh:

Tom_in_PA 08-12-2008 06:31 PM

If you find a source please PM as it has been on my wish list for some time now

SOS 01-09-2010 02:44 PM

I know a source for them.

From reading about growing it, should be fairly easy.

Here's some extra pics...

I have some divisions available!

Angurek 04-26-2010 11:24 AM

I have a hard time seeing it past all those lichens. Almost doesn't look like an orchid at all.

What I wonder about these minis is, what kind of pollinator is actually able to pollinate such tiny flowers? And what of the seeds? They must be the size of protozoa.

RosieC 05-07-2010 05:47 PM

Wow, I can't believe just how tiny this one is!

peeweelovesbooks 05-07-2010 09:42 PM

Its not very attractive, I must say. :) But it's tiny!!!
