Ever Wonder Why Neof. Himiko Photos Omit Flowers?

Neofinetia Himiko is admired for its foliage and is included in one of the gold boxes in the Meikan.

If the flowers on my Neof. Himiko are typical of the cultivar, I think I know the answer to the question posed in the title of this post.

the definition of omit is "leave out or exclude" so the question why do Neo's leave out flowers has to be a trick question as we have a flowering example right there unless I am misunderstanding this post entirely and we should just admire whatever cross this is - it sounds expensive so it probably is. Still just looks like a regular Neo to me but they are nice. Congrats on getting it to flower.

I used the word “omit” because it only has 4 letters, enabling me to express what I thought was what I intended.

If the space provided was larger, I would have written “Why do Photos of Neof. Himiko Only Show It When Unflowered”.

If it is still unclear as to my intent, the answer to the question is that its flowers are not as appealing as most flowers of neos including the “standard” appearance shared by most.

Expensive is a relative term so I won't comment on whether it is expensive.

is it because the flowers are sort of smushed? do they have the nice neo smell?

It's amusing that it's called 'Himiko' 卑弥呼, the queen of an ancient king(queen?)dom in Japan. Historical texts note that she was never seen after her enthronement. An inadvertent nod to an otherwise beautiful plant. I like the fullness and curvature of the leaves.

In April 2019 I submitted a thread “Neofinetia Kibana” showing the color development of the blooms. I never followed up on the quick death of the growth that produced the flowers.

Upon repotting I found the growth had no roots.

Evidentially in its desperate attempt to continue the line, it formed the display. It’s really pathetic but its picture here (and the original thread) in a sense makes it immortal.

The other growths are doing fine but have a long way to go to reach blooming size.

I learned a while ago to hedge and never speak in absolutes, especially about plant behavior.

In general, I know less than a grain of sand on the beach in the universe of information….as long as I remember that, the advice is always tempered

I have seen a death spike twice and it is a true Ly amazing thing the plants do to keep the line alive. It is curious why they couldn’t use that energy to, say, grow new roots, and live, but the prime mover has taught them well.

But not to derail too much….do you know of any other neo hybrids with “weak” flowers?

I as to the question about neos with weak flowers other than Himiko, the Kibana flowers were well formed and “strong” despite the growth. I don't know of any problem hybrid neos other than ones that are difficult to flower but that might be my culture.
