Finally got it put on a decent display....

camille1585 06-02-2020 04:11 PM

That is a beautiful plant! Nice colors too, I'm always amazed by how much variation in color this species has.

rbarata 06-02-2020 05:47 PM

Please post your growing conditions, especially min. temp and HR.

SouthPark 06-02-2020 05:50 PM

That's beautiful MV. Could you load up bigger size photos around 1024 x 768 pixels (length x height) for landscape format images ----- and portrait images around 768 x 1024? The small images show something ----- but larger will show more of the beauty.

DirtyCoconuts 06-02-2020 07:00 PM

i would love the bigger pics too, this is too amazing to not have a poster size

rbarata 06-02-2020 07:09 PM

I would also like that the photos could show the size of the plant (to compare with mine):)

JScott 06-02-2020 07:38 PM

That is a fine looking tenebrosa. I have one which is a seedling of two highly awarded parents, but it is still just a baby, a number years away from blooming, but I can't wait to see what it looks like when it finally blooms. I sure hope it is as nice as yours.

I ignored this plant for the most part, it was on my phal shelf all winter... so it got fed and watered just like my phals, then in March I put it top shelf... my growing area faces due east... I water/ mist twice daily... I have moss and mushrooms growing on the top of the medium... it got down to 46 this winter, but I sealed off my lanai and put a space heater out there for my phals... my culture is not what you would call typical... every other day I put a 8 oz cup of bustelo and 3 cc’ of superthrive in my gallon sprayer with rain water..... :dunno:

Maybe check the pixel length and width details in the ipad to see what size it is. Or have a picture editor in iPad that allows you to resize a duplicate image down to approximately 1024x768 or approximately 768x1024 for uploading.

Test

Photobucket

---------- Post added at 08:13 AM ---------- Previous post was at 08:08 AM ----------

That doesn’t work either...

Vbullentin isn’t the best forum for sharing photos... never has been

rbarata 06-09-2020 08:13 AM

I use postimages.org then select the direct link to the image and use it in the forum tool "Insert image".

I lost many of my hptos posted here because at one time Photobucket decided to stop this feature to free users, unless you pay. So I ditch them.

I ended up hosting my photos on my own server with an open source photo gallery application (piwigo) just to be free of the constraints of the popular websites, where their terms and conditions are constantly changing... For all the non important stuff I use postimages like you do or ImgBB, which works similarly.

Nothing wrong with the gallery here, I just prefer to enbed the images directly in my photos rather than clicking on thumbnails.

DirtyCoconuts 06-09-2020 09:01 AM

the pics are great- i also enjoy the shadows from the curtain - adds dramatic effect

i have never heard of adding coffee and it intrigues me...maybe because i grew up with Cubans who live on pure caffeine LOL

rbarata 06-09-2020 09:08 AM

Here's a couple of photos of my tenebrosa...never bloomed, maybe because it's still too small...or because the HR is too low... or because night temps are too high...or all of these.
But has been growing well...in fact there's a new growth right now.

Just snapped this pict...

MV5 ----- terrific photos! Those big size photos really does it! Beautiful. Totally agree with DC - that lighting effect works very nicely.

Looks like about right rbarata - as in the right size. I think the leaves on mine are about the same size as yours, and my latest growth has a big sheath. It was originally growing in South East Queensland early this year - this is the one I purchased in January on impulse hahaha ----- when I was firm-set that I wasn't going to buy any orchids - mainly because taking them back on the plane could be too much trouble.

I ended up just putting it in a big plastic shopping bag with leaves popping out, and took it onboard the plane. Other passengers quite liked seeing the orchid leaves poke out the top. Maybe provided a relaxing mood heheh.

Anyway - I'm just thinking that your orchid is fine. Or looks great actually. I just have mine in North East Queensland conditions - and the lighting is morning sun --- up to late morning. As for the sheath on mine, I only start getting hopeful when sheaths progress to final bud stage - or when the buds actually open. The 'will believe it when I see it' school-of-thought hahaha.

I reckon your plant is ready for action.

JScott 06-09-2020 10:23 PM

LOL I'm not gonna bother to post a pic of mine. It's maybe 5 inches tall. It has a long way to go before it looks like yours, but it has great parents, so I expect great things from it.

On the two growths that flowered for me, the leaves are 12”x2.5” and the growths are as fat as I have ever seen them...

JS ...... a pic of that orchid would fit in nicely here! I think even if 1 inch tall ..... definitely worth seeing.

You asked for it, so here it is lol. He's a happy, cute little plant. He's going to grow up and be big and beautiful... in about 6 or 7 years haha. But I'm patient. It will be worth the wait.

I don't think it will be quite that long... maybe 3 or 4 years. It could surprise you!

SouthPark 06-10-2020 11:09 PM

That's awesome JS. Thanks for showing that photo. That is really progessing along very nicely.

Totally agree ---- it definitely could surprise you.

JScott 06-11-2020 10:20 AM

Yes, I know 6 or 7 years is probably an overly pessimistic estimate, but I don't want to put too much pressure on him. I want him to take his time and bloom only when he is ready, whether that's three years or more

DirtyCoconuts 06-11-2020 10:51 AM

i am confident that it will progress at or near its peak potential in your care!

I appreciate your vote of confidence, but the fact is that I do still occasionally kill a plant haha. I've been making some changes to my growing habits lately to help combat that, and it's been a very long time since I killed a Cattleya. I'm pretty good with those. I know I can get this one to work out. You know how some plants, for various reasons, are just more special to you than others? This plant is special to me. It took a long time for me to find not just any tenebrosa, but the right tenebrosa. I have seen some pretty lousy tenebrosas, so I wanted one with known parentage of high quality. The boys over at Marlow's helped me find such a plant (they have such great customer service), so this one is special to me, and of course I take extra care with the plants that are special to me. This one is gonna have a good, long life for sure.

This is smart. Manage expectations. How stoked will you be once it blooms in only, say, four years!!!

SouthPark 06-11-2020 06:34 PM

True! The greater the pessimistic level, the better the surprise package will be!!!!!!

Minivin5,

Use advanced search to load the Papayj thread entitled Shuntenno in bud watch and scroll down to where Hakumin explains how to form large pictures after a thumbnail has been created.

There are many steps and although each step is easy, transitioning between screens between steps you will find it to be trial and error. I still sometimes have to start at the beginning before succeeding. If you have the time keep at it and eventually you will succeed.

I use an iPad Air 2.

A few more comments:

If pictures print sideways, reshape photo to a square. Then form thumbnail.

Also form and save thumbnail picture before attempting to create large copy. Then edit to form large copy. Do not attempt to do all at once which can result in losing thumbnail.

Fairorchids 09-14-2020 08:24 PM

I have grown tenebrosas from 2" pot (tiny seedlings) to BS in 2-3 years (granted, in a greenhouse). They can bloom surprisingly small, so I don't think you have more than 2 years to go.
