Amesiella (Angraecum) monticola in bloom!
4 Attachment(s)
This just opened yesterday and I am sooo happy! This is my first time blooming this. I purchased it from Andy's Orchids when I got the Quickie Project Plant #1 in October or November of last year. I can proudly say I can take full credit for this bloom! At first I thought the spike was going to be a new growth when it first started...I am sure glad I was wrong! And maybe someday I will have a camera that will take decent pictures and a photo editing program that I can fix the pictures with....I tried with what I have! I have to say....this is one of my favorites....it is such a beauty! I just love it!
Enjoy! |
I'm not surprised you love it, Becca. Me too! What a lovely little flower and such a beautiful sparkle to the petals.
|
I also bought mine from Andys orchids at the NY show 2 years ago,and it flowered well the first year.
This year the bud became dinner to a snail #@*&^%*. I think I found the culprit, lets see if I'm right. I'm curious, how do you grow yours? I grow mine under a two bulb fluorescent at cool/int.temps. |
Nice growing! That is very pretty. I love the shape of the blossom.
|
I grow mine in intermediate temps (lows at night in the low 60's and high's so far in the mid 70's during the day), I think those are intermediate temps....lol. I grow it in my orchidarium which has a humidity of about 70% and the orchidarium has 3 biaxe flourescent lights....I think I have it about two feet away from the lights....but I would have to measure that, I could be off on that estimate.....
|
That's so pretty, Becca! Easy to see why its a favourite! Great growing!
|
Nice bloom!! I really like how these guys have such a sparkly, crystaline quality to the flowers. Not to mention the fact that the flowers are almost bigger than the plants!! Good growing!!
|
Really, really, nice! And the photos are too!
Thanks for sharing. AL |
Beautiful! Good growing.:) White flowers are my favorite.
|
I am so impressed with that happy bloom!
Cool photos too. |
Good job Becca! I can't get mine to bloom.
|
That is too cute! I love it! Another one to add to the wishlist ;)

Great job, Becca!!! :cheer:
I haven't been able to get mine to do anything at all! A great photo editing program, FREE, is: Paint.NET - Free Software for Digital Photo Editing |

Not surprised that it would be a favorite of anyone who has one - that beautiful pure white color. What do you have in planted in or mounted on? I am a G/H grower without an evap. cooler, just fans, was wondering how it would do?
|
I purchased it from Andy's Orchids...I am not sure what he uses for his mounts...but it looks to be a piece of wood...sorry I can't be any more informative! It did have spag around the roots...it started looking yucky so I cut it away and used coco husk fiber around the roots instead....I water it daily, but the leaves are still showing some signs of dehydration...I am not sure what I should do for it...maybe but on some fresh sphag moss to replace the yucky stuff I took away...the old probably got yucky because I have been bad at leaving them in the water daily for 30 minutes at a time....

Hi!
I grow mine in sphagnum, and I think it need to be constant moist when it is in spike. I am looking at my little fellow every day now - waiting for buds and flowers :) This link might be useful: Australian Orchid Council Inc. - Orchids Australia Magazine |
Well I am sad to say that this one is barely hanging in there. I'm not sure what went wrong. I watered it daily...probably gave it to much love...lol. I have another one that was given to me...it's putting out two new roots but hasn't bloomed for me....it's the stubborn one Ross had..lol. It's older roots aren't looking so good so I am praying for the two new roots to take over....I just don't get what I am doing wrong. I have it in high humidity and intermediate temps and water it daily, sometimes every other day by dunking it in water for a few minutes.

Amesiella Monticola care
I just bought my first one this year. Do you cut the spikes after blooming, or leave them on?
|
On mine, the spikes always die back after blooming so I cut them.
Susan |
I let the spikes die back naturally and then cut them off.
