Polystachya concreta

This is a cute little thing that grows everywhere in our southeastern forests. The showy species are the African ones; ours are sort of green/creamy, like this, with small, non-resupinated flowers as is characteristic to the genus. The flowers may be tiny, but large specimen plants (and by this I mean a plant fitting a 3-4" pot) can give hundreds of flowers!

Very cool looking plant. I love the green flowered orchids.

Mauro,

I am pretty sure this one is actually Polystachya foliosa, which is restricted to Central and South America and the Caribbean. Surprisingly, I don't see any record of it in Africa like Poly. concreta!

Very nice growing and captures! :)

Thanks Pat, you may be right. On the other hand, it is a well-known fact that here Polystachya concreta is a plant that grows in the mangrove at the seashores. You will find it exclusively on the branches of a certain mangrove tree (Rhyzophora mangle L.) and only on that tree. The plant in the photo I collected in the mangrove where a new road section was in construction. There, Polystachya concreta was plentiful, really thousands of plants in a relatively small area. So, I didn’t think much to classify it as so.
As to the African records for Polystachya concreta I may have induced to a mistake when I said 'the showy species are the African ones' right after the phrase where I was talking about P. concreta. My fault. I intended to say that the genus has its showiest species in Africa. Sorry.

I know this is an older thread and I'm that much older...but I no longer see a picture :(

I just ordered a compot of Polystachya foliosa from Troy Meyers and was hoping to check this one out again :bua:

Mauro,

How do you grow this one? What kind of media is it growing in?

This specific clone used to be a difficult guy, Royal! I used to grow it in tree fern fiber and it had a tendency to get dehydrated. Then two years ago I moved it to sphagnum moss (mixed with white Styrofoam peanuts) and I guess I solved the problem.

Good to know

Amazing pics. We have some very similar to those growing in the everglades I have to check the name. If you are not looking for them you would walk right by them, but upon close inspection they are awesome.

I totally agree! If you look at the details you see these little flowers are awesome!

Upon further review it has been determined that these are the same ones growing here in the everglades. Took me long enough huh? I knew I had seen a post on this little guy before.

Does anyone have any growing info as far as how much light, or if they need a winter rest? I have mine potted in a plastic pot with chc and the roots have filled the pot, but I see some yellowing in the leaves so I wasn't sure if it is something I am doing or not doing to cause this. TIA!
