Neofinetia falcata (Project 6b - Spring 2008)

OK. The 'hard part' of picking a list of plants to choose from is already done - kinda... there is still a long list to choose from!! But any one that strikes your fancy will work!

We are all going to choose a Neofinetia falcata - tons of different varieties out there - one for everyone!!

The really fun part of this project (apart from it being another awesome excuse to buy another orchid, and share it with all of the folks here!) will be in the potting and display of this baby.

There are several threads talking about different potting and display methods, so have a look! Get creative! And then we can all look forward to wonderful photos of the display. :D

Diane

shakkai 03-27-2008 10:54 AM

Great Diane!! You definitely don't want Gwen to have all the fun!

gmdiaz 03-27-2008 11:12 AM

Heh Heh Heh

Ross 03-27-2008 11:14 AM

New World for me (it's close).

Becca 03-27-2008 12:29 PM

So for the Neo falcata, are we all going to have to agree on the same variation or are we getting whatever variation strikes our fancy?

shakkai 03-27-2008 12:30 PM

Great research, as always, Dorothy! We'd all be lost without you!!

I think the general opinion is that we should all go for the one we especially want. (I hope that is okay, and possibly we can still get a group discount!)

Dorothy 03-27-2008 12:51 PM

Change in chart

I deleted it to change the chart seeing that I didn't add OakHill - here is the revised ..
the only question I have is how big are the plants from NWO? :hmm

I might go with Oak Hill ..
( This way I can order more orchids :coverlaugh: )

That sounds like a plan for me also. This year I sort of was planning my buying around what they have. Sedirea's don't particularly catch my eye (I already have 2) but the Neo's are a definite. I also have a spot for a potted one, even a largish one.

shakkai 03-27-2008 01:19 PM

Dorothy, Here are the ones that Gwen recently got from New World...

quiltergal 03-27-2008 01:45 PM

I'm coveting that Awa Ai of Gwen's! As a quilter I could put that to VERY good use. :D May be a good reason to order from NWO.

shakkai 03-27-2008 02:52 PM

Dorothy, many times the Neofinetia I've seen are priced by the number of growths they have. So the question to ask Oak Hill would be that, rather than pot size....

Extremely important! Glad you mentioned this Shannon.

shams 03-27-2008 03:47 PM

I don't think there are Neo variations available in Canada , at least, not that I've seen...:scratchhead:

Are you planning on getting these along with the other project plant? Do I want another Neo? Granted the one I have won't bloom for a while.... maybe a couple years...

Decisions, decisions....:faint: :faint: :faint:

Oh... I guess New World Orchids ships to Canada...... at a minimum order of $100!!!:faint:

Not hard to do. Get one of these New World Orchids Neofinetia falcata and you'll be over the limit real quick

shams 03-27-2008 03:59 PM

Noooooo kidding......

shakkai 03-27-2008 04:01 PM

US$1 = 0.49918 GBP = 0.63380 EUR = 1.01815 CAD

shams 03-27-2008 04:03 PM

It's been how many months now, and I still find it amusing that Canada's dollar is so strong..... Now why can't they stop printing books with the five dollar difference between USD and CAD?!?:scratchhead:

cowboy51278 03-27-2008 04:12 PM

they're still gonna need to print the two different prices on there. the only difference is that soon it'll all cost more in the US.

shams 03-27-2008 04:46 PM

OK... so tell me again when we'd have to buy the Neo by? I'm still kind of undecided about this project... so pricey :_(

Becca 03-27-2008 05:02 PM

Shams....no breaking the pocket book....it isn't worth it. I dont' think there is an actual date as of yet on when to order.

Petrol still costs more here in pounds (almost £5 per gallon) than it does in the US in dollars.... So I don't wanna hear any complaining!!!

No pressure!!! You can join in if you like and choose any vendor at any price that you like. One of the themes of this project is more about display than about bloom, so you wouldn't be disadvantaged by a young plant either. But don't break the bank over this!

Becca 03-27-2008 05:28 PM

ok...now that we have the project 6 plant chosen...it it time to get this baby roll-in! What do we need to do to get closer to ordering the Neo?

shakkai 03-27-2008 05:36 PM

Not a lot Becca. If people want to order their Neo from the same place as the project plant - place the order!!

If anyone wants to order one or both from New World Orchids, we need to know how many people want to do that so we can go back to them and see what they can offer us.

So far, I've only got three confirmed people who want to go the NWO route.

count me in too. I was planning on placing an order with them tonight for 2 neos, but if they're gonna give us a deal ill hang on for a couple days.

caseydoll 03-27-2008 05:47 PM

Hi guys! :waving I'm thinking I want to order from NWO but I think I need some help! :blushing: Being a Neo newbie I'm not sure what i should be looking for. For instance, how many growths should I be looking for? If anyone can give me any suggestions on what I should get that would be GREAT! I'm looking for something other than white if possible that would be small enough (do they all stay small?) to go under my lights. I'm going to keep looking but would love some ideas. Sorry for being dumb about this but I've never had one before as you all know, and I don't know much about them! :_(

shakkai 03-27-2008 05:48 PM

Paul, nothing is confirmed, but there is a good chance I think if we have enough people.

Well I think I would like to order from NWO as well, but I was kind of hoping to see some pictures of the different leaves on the Sedirea japonica's they have....I have one already, and the way NWO decsribes one (almost round leaves) it sounds like what I have. Do you think they would be willing to provide some pictures of Sedirea's and Neo's upon request?

Sarah, This is one of the great things about New World Orchids... based on Gwen's experience, they are very helpful with suggesting good ones based on their knowledge. I'm sure you can get some great suggestions from people here too!

Becca, I don't see why they wouldn't... after all its an important feature of the plants they're selling. It would actually be quite nice if they could post the photos here, so that we could all see them!

caseydoll 03-27-2008 05:58 PM

Thanks Shannan for that advice! Does anyone know what you are getting yet? :)

camille1585 03-27-2008 06:01 PM

I'll participate if NWO has some decently priced Neos or if I can locate a cheap one in France. If NWO or Shannan can ship it from the show in the UK, then the exchange rate is in my favor!

shakkai 03-27-2008 06:36 PM

Camille, if you look through their list, they have some that are €13.00 for two mature growths, or €19.00 for three growth plants. Which doesn't seem like a bad price.

The note on their web site says:

Quote:

We can ship from England to anywhere in Europe!

$100 US Minimum order for shipping. No minimum for bringing plants to the show. Please place your order by June 1!
If those in Europe want to order together, let me know as I am going to the show to pick up in any case.
