First flower of the season, more to come:

Very nice. Make sure you let that bay rest for the winter.

I am jealous of your naturally available options. I had to buy a little fridge for that purpose.

They bloom?

Nice! Bring on the carnivores haha
|
How much below freezing can they handle? And do they need soil conditions on the acidic or alkaline side?
|
Acidic, I believe. I don't know about temperatures. I put mine in a cold window and hoped for the best. They bloomed this spring and have been putting out new 'leaves'.
I cannot grow them outside where I live, not reliably. I would have to take measures to protect them. Some people who live in colder climates make their bog garden a little lower in the ground and, in autumn, cover the entire thing with a heavy board, lay plastic over the board and cover the entire thing with leaves. In the spring, they uncover the entire thing. Sort of like growing figs.... |
Yes they need acidic media without any nutrients in it (I.e sphagnum, sphagnum peat, perlite, etc.)
To give you an idea, I know someone that grows them along with other temperate carnivores outdoors year round in zone 6b |
