Sarracenia psittacina
 

I got a new carnivorous plant from a local carnivorous plant society show. The umbrella like blooms are so pretty and so is the colorful veination of the pitchers.

It's nickname is parrot pitcher plant..maybe that is why it has that botanical name :) It does look like having a parrot head with that curved part of the leaf tube. Compared to other Sarracenia's with a bigger tube opening.

Accdg. to the seller it is growing on peat moss and some sand. Then I have it now sitting in distilled water with some sphagnum moss.

Fingers crossed, I hope this one grows well.:biggrin:

Interesting you should say that Tindomul, it's called the Parrot Pitcher Plant. The name is in reference to the bulbous head of the pitchers, which forms the vague shape of a parrot's head or beak.

Tarev, may I ask what the glass cylinder is for.

I am letting it sit in distilled water that's why it is in a glass cylinder, then the outer heavier pot is just for more weighted support. It is quite windy here most of the time, so I am hoping it will help keep the water from drying out fast and help the plant from being tossed out by the wind.

I got the idea from my neighbor here, who is growing a Venus fly trap and their plant is likewise in an open top glass cylinder, also sitting in water.

Peat and sand mix is the media recommended for all the bog garden type insectivorous plants.

I would be a bit concerned if proper drainage is not being provided by allowing any of these types of plants to sit constantly in water. Stagnating water can certainly lead rapidly to anaerobic conditions promoting death and destruction.

Frequent watering to maintain moist media and high humidity but with good drainage is the best method of cultivation.
