I'm so excited because this one was pretty strug' when I bought it, medium was completely broken down with roots rotting and leaves wrinkled. Now the first new growth since I've had it is blooming! And it's my only red orchid, so that's nice too. :D

Congrats! I love the feeling I get when a plant that wasn't doing well for a while gives me flowers!

It looks pretty happy now! Can't wait to see the blooms!

I don't own one of these, but I've seen them in bloom - so cute! :) Also, what is the name of the phal in your avatar? Love that orange colour.

Not to hijack your thread on the Howeara Lava Burst, but is the Asconopsis plant more like a vanda or a phal??

THAT is an excellent question, and you are sure to find people with different opinions on this. The parents of Ascps Irene Dobkins are Phal Doris and Ascocentrum Miniatum. From my little experience, the culture for Irene Dobkin is similar, if not th same as Ascocentrum Miniatum. I have mine in brigh dappled shade, and a bit more moisture than a vanda, but not nearly as much as a Phal. I have heard you can grow them bare root if they have enough humidity and moisture. I'm in south Florida, so the heat will dry the roots too quickly. So I have mine in a mix of CHC and charcoal in shallow wooden baskets. The medium is completely dry in 2 days or so. I've had a very difficult time finding solid culture info on this, so I plan on posting something quite thorough after more time has passed with growing/blooming success. Thank you for your interest. This is by far my favorite orchid! :)

Thanks for the identification of your avatar. It is very pretty. I bought an Asconopsis Jia Ho Orange back in March and it is still blooming! Its flowers open up a dark orange colour which eventually fade to a medium pink colour (kind of hard to describe). I love mine too! :)

I have seen pictures of Jiaho's Orange, and just recently saw some in person at the Redland show. They were so tiny! Lovely as well! I did want one, but only had a budget for a few new orchids. Here is a larger picture of my Ascps Irene Dobkin.

Thank you for posting the larger picture! I can see why its your favourite orchid. It is a softer orange than my
Jiaho's Orange & it has a nice orange lip to go along with it. Definitely on my wishlist. Thanks for enabling!
