some of my other jewels

I'm growing out a bunch of bits and pieces. I killed my favorite one, unfortunately, without ever taking a picture - so I took a bunch of pics today of what I have!
I am too lazy to look up all the names tonite, but if you wish to know one just ask and I'll look it up for you.

Photos don't do jewels justice - they sparkle quite a bit in bright light. When I show them I put a flashlight right next to the pot on the show table!
The first 2 are of Ludesia discolor, which is currently blooming.

lovely! I had a jewel once - will need to have another try with them!

Tindomul 04-14-2011 01:07 PM

Not all of them are Ludisia discolor, right?? The last two look like something else maybe.

fishmommy 04-14-2011 01:08 PM

that is correct. I have several different types of cuttings growing

Tindomul 04-14-2011 01:11 PM

Do you know the names of the others?

fishmommy 04-14-2011 01:23 PM

the one with pinkish veins is Anoectochilus roxburghii
the one with white veins is Anoectochilus formosanus
and of course the macodes petola is the bright green one
I have a few others that didn't make the photo

Tindomul 04-14-2011 01:26 PM

Nice collection!

Beautiful collection! I love jewel orchids! I wish they weren't so hard to find. I only have Ludisia discolor.

Fishmommy,

I wanted to ask you how exactly are you keeping your Macodes? I have one that is only a small 2 inch long stem with three leaves and as of yet no healthy roots (a couple of months now). Its really pathetic. I'm surprised its still alive. I am keeping it in my 10 gallon aquarium, on top of some soil lightly covered in some sphagnum. I don't water the tank because its always moist. What would you do with a small cutting like mine?

fishmommy 04-15-2011 10:32 AM

jewels are funny - very difficult to get going in my experience.
here's how I got mine to show size:
use sterile, fresh coir (bake it) or sphagnum
lay the plant on the bed - do not cover it
water daily
it can take medium light levels as long as humidity is high. I grow them under glass
these are prone to rot
