Can I get advice for what I am doig wrong with my phals.?
A month ago I removed them from their pot into full water
culture. Since then I noticed their roots from the stim becoming brownish and under the water got some black parts on them too :/
What I do wrong that their roots’ health going down?
Any advice? I’ve attached few pictures also.
Thank you guys very much :/
Adapting to a new way of growing (growing in bark and air, and being watered) is different than being in water all the time. The roots will adapt eventually, but what will happen is that the roots that you have now will die off. That has started from what you say. You will then get new roots that are adapted to water."
This happens to other plants as well. Pothos, for example, can live in a fish tank. But the roots it has will get brown and die, and the new white roots will start to grow. If you just use a cutting, you will not see the dying part, just the growing part of the cycle.
I don't know the protocal but I thought that you were supposed to take them out of water and alternate in water/out of water.
This is what I have heard. I do not do water culture because it is a little scary for me.
When you move an orchid to a radically different culture method (bark or other traditional media to S/H or water culture), it's very important to time the transition with the growth of new roots. Why? Because the existing roots grew tailored to the environment they were in while they were growing, and when you move them to water culture, the roots can't adapt to it. They ultimately will die, and thus the importance of making sure the plant has brand new roots starting when you make the switch. Those will grow in their new environment, and so will be adapted to such a wet life.
I see that there are some new roots, so there is hope yet for a successful transition.
