Reporting and found rot. How to treat? Male
Default Reporting and found rot. How to treat?

Good morning everyone. I grabbed three Small Phals off of a fire sale table. All three are in moss and so overwatered that I dumped water out.

Doing repots to bark this morning and found a bit of rot/fungus, mold or some other nastiness. It’s localized but I’d like to knock this out right now.

I did a search here but nothing showed up. Can someone tell me what I can use to treat this without risking injury to the orchid?

Thank you in advance.

Let me jump on my laptop and I’ll attach a pic.

From the photo, it's hard to discern of that is old rot that has stopped, or something that has just begun.

Taking a cautious approach, I would either treat the plant with a copper-based systemic like Phyton, or go with a live biological treatment like Inocucor Garden Solution.

Topical treatments like Physan are of no value, and home remedies like cinnamon should never be applied to the root system.

Ray, thanks for responding. I’m going to guess new, only because it was a bit smelly. Typical big box store issue. Go to on-sale table and look for orchids. Yep. Wrapped in soaking wet Sphagnum. Turn over container and dump 10 gallons of water out. Bring home and IMMEDIATELY get it out of the Sphag. Move to bark medium to at least the poor things catch some air!

I’ll hit the nursery when they open this morning and see what’s available.

In the future... If that were confined to roots only, I would not use fungicide. I would merely cut off the black roots, then repot.
