I divide when they outgrow a 12" pot and/or if it's a "pot-walker" and the back section starts to look scraggly. Or, in the case of some orchids like lycaste, the center gets old and doesn't look as neat...i will divide those at that time.
12" pot is my max or when the plant begins to look messy. Big is awesome...but I can't stand scraggly.
One exception...i keep ctsm to a max of 6-8" pots with no more than 6 growths. IME, they do better when divided every 2-3 years.
With all of that said, I do have a couple of c purps in 14" pots but they are very neat and upright growers so they are ok under the lights. Next repot though...they will have to be divided. Hauling those up and down ladders is getting tricky.
Edit- one of the 14"-ers is a maxima but it's also an upright grower so good under lights and doesn't crowd out it's neighbors.
