De-mounting Dendrochilum wenzelii

I bought this Dendrochilum wenzelii this weekend. Although my home set-up does not make for happy mounted orchids, this was the only one they had.
I would like to de-mount it and put it in a pot, but I have read that this guy does not like his roots disturbed. There is nothing visibly attaching the orchid to the mount--no string or wire. I would need to surgically remove it, I guess.
Any suggestions on how to best move forward? Can I try potting it? Or should I just wrap the roots in a bit of sphagnum?

If you can't be doing with mounts, I would free the upper roots carefully, cut off the top part of the mount and shove it all into a pot.
