I don't think they give a stuff, as long as te bark is large and you sieve it to remove all the fine stuff.

Technically they need no medium, just a branch to grow on, but they need more and regular watering.

I grew some once in large flat trays with a single layer of bark fragments. The root growth in under a year was phenomenal.

That rectangle of roots in the pic is half a metre long.

It also doesn't matter how deep the pot is as long as there is large bark in it and nothing else. You need to water three times a week in summer, (every day for a really shallow pot or mount) but a deep pot only needs about once a week in the winter.

you can go to a 10" pot....I have used either clay or plastic....azalea pots...the short ones....and they do well....its a bit harder to work around a great big monster plant, so I tend to bust them up.....as bil said...they like BIG HARD BARK! no little stuff!

Yeah the beauty of that is you can't overpot, and you can't overwater if the medium is just large bark.

Looks like a last year's flowering spike that has been cut off.

Because catts "walk" in other words are sympodial, and create a rhyzome, the shallow large pot would suit it better. Having it tied down is important because they like to be secure and not move around much. I think the absolute best situation for a catt, is a hanging pot.
