I don't think they give a stuff, as long as te bark is large and you sieve it to remove all the fine stuff.
Technically they need no medium, just a branch to grow on, but they need more and regular watering.
I grew some once in large flat trays with a single layer of bark fragments. The root growth in under a year was phenomenal.
That rectangle of roots in the pic is half a metre long.
It also doesn't matter how deep the pot is as long as there is large bark in it and nothing else. You need to water three times a week in summer, (every day for a really shallow pot or mount) but a deep pot only needs about once a week in the winter.
