Healing phal.
I have this phal that I rescued from the store, lost most of the roots but has been growing some. I just have it in regular coarse bark but wondering if another medium would be better for it while it grows more roots.

Yeah, it's just hard to keep it evenly moist especially towards the top.

Those look like good, healthy roots. It looks like they are going to grow down into the medium, which is what you want. I wouldn't worry too much about the dry layer at the top of the pot. The roots are stimulated to follow the moisture, deeper into the medium. This is what you want, and it's working for your plant.

Thank you all for the advice! Ive got it potted in a plastic pot right now and have that inside a ceramic pot with a tray of pebbles on the bottom that I keep a shallow layer of water in. Seems to do a good job wicking up the water which I imagine makes a cool humid invironment for the plant.

Humid is good, but hybrid Phals in general like to be warm, not cool.

I just rescued one from a nursing home window. I did as you have done but, I tented it with a clear plastic bag. Poke a few holes in the top. In a week it was rooted in and in two weeks is throwing a spike and looks great. I water by weight. Unlike the others, I soak everyone and fertilize weekly weakly. In the winter less.
