Oops...sent too soon.
The Zoo-Med stuff might be OK if mixed with bark for a little extra water retention, but it's not as good as the long-strand stuff for standalone use.

Ray, the OP was trying to find a local source in L.A.
I know you sell the Besgrow stuff; what characteristics of the Zoo-Med brand do you consider not up to par?

Oxnard is a bit of a schlep, but I get out that way occasionally so I'll file that resource away. It's definitely in the price range I'm used to. Thanks.
That kilo on Amazon isn't terribly priced with free shipping.
edit: I should have bought it while I could. Now there's shipping and the price sucks.
I agree about the zoo med stuff. It's a mixer.

You can check out the downtown flower market, sometimes they do have sphagnum moss for sale.

We're in the same time zone now. I just clicked on the link in sweetjblue's message and it's offered with shipping included.

Now you're just picking on me.
1) Where did I recommend purchasing anything, anywhere? I was merely relating my experiences.
2) I did not recommend either mail-ordering it, or mail-ordering it from me. I'm getting out of the potting media part of the business. Besides, I have never sold anything I did not feel was the best available for the money. The fact that I carry it is a testament to the product, not just a way to make some money.
3) Now, to actually address the real issue of this thread, the Zoo-Med sphagnum I have seen tended to be "clumps" rather than strands, and the species of moss chosen does not appear to be as fluffy as that in the Besgro stuff. Maybe it was just that particular batch, but it didn't impress me, so I don't recommend it.

I acknowledged your familiarity with the Besgrow product as a product you sell, and as a yardstick for evaluating the Zoo Med product. The only question I asked was why the Zoo Med was sub par, which you answered.

I think I used the Zoo Med stuff just once when I couldn't get anything locally and needed moss right away.
Didn't like it. As Ray said clumpy, and short strands and I ultimately found it didn't last long before breaking down into basically crap. If I remember correctly it might have been some type of Chilean moss, but I'm not sure now as it was some years ago. I'd use the stuff sold at Lowe's in a pinch before I'd use that stuff again.
Quality wins out over price cause, to me at least, the cheap stuff ends up being more expensive over the long run. More frequent repotting and could cost in the loss of plant or it's general health.
That's just my on the matter.
