Broken roots on mounted phal

I have a phal that I recently mounted as an experiment - and it seems to be doing ok- but in the process of removing it from the pot it was previously- I noticed that so many roots were broken- had kept growing - but I wanted to know if the roots would heal? Or is it better to let the new roots grow out and then remove the old and broken ones.

I live in a temperate climate- year round humidity around 60-80 % and temps 60-80 degrees
