Mounted Dendro- what to do? Male
Default Mounted Dendro- what to do?

Several years ago I mounted what I thought was a small dendrobium on an upside down pot. Since then the stalks have gotten large and fallen over. It is too big to bring inside to any of the tables and window sills I have. I was thinking it would be possible to hang on the wall. Anyone have any other ideas? The tag on the original parent says Den. Woon Leng which has also become quite large.

It would probably look very natural if it was hung. Good luck!

I bet you could:
- Thread a small non-corroding chain, like brass, through the drainage hole;
- Put a brass bolt shorter than the diameter of the pot bottom through the last link inside the pot;
- Thread a brass nut onto the bolt to keep it on the chain;
- Hang the contraption with the brass chain.

I agree with Seca.

It is a Den Phalaenopsis type, but with some 'antelope' type in the background.

While they are usually sold in a manageable size, mature plants can grow canes up to 3-4' (or more), depending upon the species in the background.

While these usually grow fairly straight up, this one illustrates why one should keep an eye on the plant, and stake it if it becomes too unruly.

I have come to understand how unruly they can be. I have another dendro that uprooted even with staking.

I like Seca's idea but the plant has roots going through the drainage hole and wrapping around the pot completely. I think I might try to hang the pot on a 2 inch peg mounted on the wall.

You'll have to somehow secure it to the peg. Otherwise, I think you will have a balancing act worthy of a circus.

I think it makes for a great wall hanging (or even a table top centerpiece) but if not manageable, just break the pot and pot it up, shards and all, in a bigger pot.

I don't think the root damage caused by putting a chain through the drain hole would hurt the plant at all.

Yes, these dendrobiums are really pendant although they are commonly seen upright. I have a similar problem because there do not seem to be pots for this type of treatment. A basket with rungs on the bottom that can be moved is a good choice.

I like the chain idea too.
I'd be careful if you do something like that, if it's hung outside any time, you might want to devise a way to control any spinning it might do.
If hung close to a wall, post, support, etc. the canes and flower could be damaged.

I have the same concerns with my Phals in baskets.
I use one of those "S" shaped hooks from HD and some heavy fishing line. Hook the basket with the "S" and wrap fishing line around the hanging T they are on.

So it took me a while but I got it mounted. I have three screws holding it to the board. So far it is doing well but I can see watering might be a pain. I might be adding some moss to it to hold water.
