Default Types of wood suitable for orchid baskets

I have a number of large plants, which might need custom baskets the next time around.

I can build the baskets, but am pondering which type of wood to use. Teak is hideously expensive; does anyone have experience with oak, maple, poplar or mahogany?

I have been seeing baskets made of cork board at some of the shows the past couple of months, they look pretty good, a friend bought a couple and seems to be happy with them.

What about cedar? You could get cedar fencing boards at one of the home improvement stores and cut them to size. I don't think they would cost all that much and they should last quite awhile.

Cedar is probably the best most available choice. Just make sure it isn't treated wood if you go for inexpensive fencing or shingle stock. Cypress or redwood would be similar.

'Mahogany' is used for so many different species in lumber trade I wouldn't make a blanket recommendation. Oak should be a durable choice. Maple or fruitwoods (apple, cherry) acceptable. Poplar probably wouldn't resist rot as long as most the others mentioned.
