Default Need Catt repotting advice

The lone Catt in my collection (an unknown C. aclandiae hybrid) is in desperate need of a repot to get rid of its old stale mix. But the problem is that it has grown down over the edge of the pot, so I'm not sure how I'd repot it within damaging that or having it end up buried. The other thing is that I don't want to go up a pot size, because it doesn't seem to have many roots actually inside the pot. Any tips on the best way to repot this one?

Sorry for the sideways photo, for some reason all the portrait oriented photos I take with my phone won't get auto rotated...

What I do when I let the repot go toooooooo long is to place it in the pot in the normal way but then place big chunks of lava rock under the new growth. The future growths will go over the edge of the lava rock and root into the mix.

I agree you will have to cut off the back growth to keep it in the current pot. Can't you squeeze one 6" pot into your set up? A 6" azalea pot would be perfect and would keep the old pbulbs viable.

It seems to me it would like a hanging basket. I would never cut up an orchid. I like specimine size.

I would say cut the awkward piece off and give it to a friend. And re-pot sooner next time so it can grow to a larger plant if you want it to

The awkward piece would look rather good mounted, since the bulbs go to both sides of the rhizeome.

I try to avoid mounted plants as much as possible though. I'd be keeping it in an apartment, and mounts are much more high maintenance in terms of watering, and that's where my troubles lie with mounted orchids...

Remove some backbulbs to keep it in the same pot size (if BBs have any roots, pot them up separately).

Then repot, with front leads at the correct level vs top of media. If this means that some of the older bulbs sit a little 'too deep', that is not a problem.
