Default re potting and clear pot question...

Hi, I just re potted my phal in new media (bark/charcoal/sponge rock/ spagnum moss) mix. When I purchased the plant, it was originally packed in all moss. I read that it is quite stressful for a plant when switching from one type of media to another.

My plant also came in a clear plastic pot with holes, but was placed within a decorative plastic covering which I did not take off. I would now like to take off the plastic covering to let sunlight through to the roots and was wondering if this too would stress the plant out.

Thanks for your help.

S.

Welcome to the board.

You did the right thing. Your mix suits the phal much better than plain sphagnum.
It won't stress the plant too much.
You can get rid of the covering. That will stress the plant not a bit and is better for airflow.

Maybe you have to water a bit more often with the new medium and without the covering.

You'll find a lot of information here about watering etc.
Just use the search function.

I agree about them medium with Tschimm,
Phials love clear pots it lets their roots get some light and also helps you monitor how it's going. Hope this helps!

Thanks for the replies!

I also read that I am suppose to soak the bark mix in water over night before I plant my phal into the media.

I actually did not do this when I re potted this time as I had accidentally over watered my newly re potted phal a few days ago. I had noticed the aerial roots had turned brown after I watered it last week and my phal didn't look too happy, hence my re re potting it.

I didn't find any dead roots, but they were yellow but firm. I decided to re repot it in dryer media (non soaked bark, but with a little bit of damp moss) to help the roots dry out. Is it ok that I didn't soak the bark first? Before I re repotted the phal, I did rinse off the previous new media and sprayed the roots with H2O2.

I will be reading up on watering methods as well.

Thanks for the help!
