Is this sphagnum?
Default Is this sphagnum?

Hey guys!

I bought this from a local garden shop, she said it was sphagnum for orchids but it looks different from what I'm used to. Is it a different kind?

Thanks!

I think we'll need a picture. The smell alone isn't very distinctive from this distance.

It is a really poor quality sphag. It will compress to nothing when wet and degrade much faster than other types.

Oh, Ray!

Most of the online supply vendors carry it. I think most of us would recommend New Zealand sphag. They come in various grades. At minimum, I use the 3A grade. I have 5A for special Neo wrapping but it is VERY pricy.

Actually, I only use the stuff for specific applications. Generally, I HATE the stuff.

ETA: I've seen blocks of 3A at HD/Lowes/garden centers.

I'll check it out! My sister showed me this, this is her bag and offered me some. The brand is Mosser Lee.

I'm new to using sphagnum, I am used to repotting out of it because it retains too much moisture but I am growing under lights now and find my plants dry out faster!

Thanks for the advice.

There are a number of reliable vendors for orchid supplies. Kelley's Korner is one (they will be at NJOS show next week). I usually order from Roberts Flower Supply in OH, since they also have chunky peat (good in Cymb mix).
