Repot Oncidium in bloom?

My Oncidium sweet baby is in bloom but it's the last spike. There is new growth . The plant needs a bigger pot there are about 7 mature bulbs in a 4 inch pot and more growth on the way.

I really want to repot it since new growth is there. But I don't want to loose my flowers too soon.

How long will the blooms last after reporting it? The plant looks to be healthy and happy.

It's very possible the blooms will drop if you repot.

Well I repotted the plant today. I wanted to do it before it got too cold. It took a long time to loosen up the roots and get it all clear of old stuff. The roots were all in good shape so I did not cut any. So with very little root lose and 4 new growths. I think this plant might fold on to it's blooms.

I repotted my Phal on oct 27 after having it was in bloom for 3 weeks. The plant still have its flowers today. It's a healthy plant that could no longer fit in its pot. All the roots were in good shape. So I loosed them up and potted it a larger pot that it could fit in. It seems very happy.

Fingers crossed my Oncidium is the same.

Update. It is Dec 3 and the flowers are started to fall off. So not too bad I guess. They plant was fully in bloom when I got it on oct 27.

It might just be that the blooms had reached their end, anyway. I think you took the right action.

Orchids will not always drop their blooms when they are being repotted. If the orchid was stressed, then, yes, it would easily drop flowers in a heartbeat. Stress includes breaking a ton of roots and some new shoots.

Some orchids will drop their blooms, some will not. The more important thing is the plant. Whether the orchid aborts or not is irrelevant. What matters more is that the plant is still alive. If the plant is still alive, and if it does drop flowers, it'll usually rebloom on the next blooming cycle.
