That is quite a common way to pot up orchids in the Philippines. I remember they would open it up further like a half open watermelon for further drainage and they would put charcoal too for added support inside, I guess till the plant holds on further.
I remember seeing orchid roots just wrap around the coco container and they just let it go like that. Leaving them hanging under trees, letting the monsoon rain shower it, air dry, showered again. Pretty much they would just put the orchids there, any type they have on hand, since they do not often label or tag what they have.
Or sometimes they further cut off the husk into quarters and just use it like sphagnum moss itself as the orchids sit inside clay pots with multiple holes.
