I find that when you have old stem that is ready to come off, like photo #1, you can usually just snap off the base with some gentle finger pressure. If gentle pressure won't do it, I figure it is not quite ready yet.
I see you are in West Lafayette. I grew up in Indy, my brother is a Purdue grad. (I went to I.U., so we still get to argue during basketball season!!).

Beyond the orchids data.....when I caught the BB reference, all I could think of suddenly was...Bobby Knight....EEEEEEEwwwwww.

I know, off topic, but reading Phil's amazing book, Eleven Rings on ebook....I kept thinking Phil Jackson is the anti Bobby Knight.
