I am in the process of 'repotting' all my Vanda baskets. I am done with all the Rhynchostylis, but I still have a few Vandas to go. My (Holcoglossum kimballianum x Vanda lamellata) represents a special problem.
First of all, it is in the process of setting a new spike (straight up along the hanger), so I have to wait a month or two.
Secondly, it has roots all over the old wooden basket. Not really sure how I am going to extract if from the basket.
Lastly, not only does it have a nice keiki from the base, but it has set another keiki through the BOTTOM of the old basket!
If anyone feels ambitious, I could probably use a hand or two to deal with this case.
I get why you want it out of the basket. I have a few that I wish were hanging free.... I'm the one who put them there.
But as it goes....I once decided to take them out of their baskets and decided against it in favor of the health of the plant; not wanting to induce stress; not wanting to open wounds that might possibly invite demons.
If you're planning to rebasket them, can you slip the old basket into a new one carefully so as not to injure the keiki at the bottom of the old one? I recently had to reset a large Ascda and not wanting to disturb the roots around the basket I just slipped it into a slightly larger one and reset the wires.
