I got my first Orchid and while looking online I got mixed signals on rather I should repot it or not. In came in a small clear plastic pot and then in a bigger pot. The larger pot has a design on the top that is leaving marks on the leaves so I was thinking of reporting it. The roots are also starting to creep their way up. Any ideas?
It is always nice to repot, helps you see the condition of the root zone. Sometimes, some sellers put them into too tight conditions, too packed with sphagnum moss and the roots are suffocating. Aerial roots are okay, since some orchids are epiphytes, they like to attach to something in their natural habitat.
What type of orchid is it? If the roots are creeping up and over the end it may be time to repot. What do you mean the top of the pot is leaving marks? Just wondering. Welcome to the world of orchids.
I believe its a Phal. I went ahead and repotted. The center roots were yuckie and mushy so I cut them off and it still had plenty of good roots(they were green) and a few were a little yellow but I left them. Is that okay?
Sounds like a good plan sounds like you did great. I am not sure what new pot you placed it in but make sure it has lots of air holes for good air flow that helps them from becoming yucky stinky messes. Great growing. Also I would check the sticky on the beginners page called the phal abuse ends here usually the first 10 pages I think. Is a great help to many new growers.
