So I decided to repot today and to my horror.....
[IMG] [/IMG][IMG] [/IMG]
yea.. my heart almost jumped out of my chest when i saw it... I contacted hausermann to see if they can send a healthier one cause I'm definitely dissapointed. I repotted it in medium sized bark and I just sat the poor thing on the bark and anchored it with sticks and wire. I soaked it in superthrive but I think I will need seaweed extract too.

Wow…
I never anticipated something like this to happen.
That's your reason right there. Root damage will definitely make the plant look like it does as well as prevent the plant from flowering.
I wouldn't go overboard with the root stimulants. Rooting hormones only have a positive effect up to a certain dosage. Anything below the dosage range that stimulate roots will not stimulate anything nor have a negative effect. Anything above the dosage range to stimulate roots will have a negative effect.
This is about all I know in regards to auxins, (a group of plant hormones that for the most part stimulates root growth). I don't know too much of the specifics. It's a rather complicated matter.
Sorry to break it to you, but a plant in this kind of condition will most likely not be in bloom for another 2 - 3 years. Maybe more. You were right to request a replacement.

I have really good experience with Hausermans. They may be able to help with this. However, I have experienced plants with poor roots from them too and those did not do too well. I regret not calling them at that time.
I am wondering if transit time caused the damage to roots. Because plant would not grow this big without roots.
However, leaves are nice looking and you have a bit of healthy roots left there. I think it will make more healthy roots. I do not know your location (might update your profile to include location ) but in south Florida roots do fine without media around them. Be careful with how much media you have.... too much will kill whatever healthy root left.

I also have had good experience with them but there will be a time when they slip. It happens. I don't expect all of the plants in their inventory to be in perfect condition. They deal with thousand of plants everyday and if i happen to receive an inferior quality plant, I would let them know cause it's unacceptable and it gives them a chance to do better in the future. The transit is too short for the roots to die too quickly(2 days total) and I don't see any remains of dead roots in the media.. Just that tiny bit in my photo is all the plant has and I don't know how it survived unless they repotted it and trimmed the roots prior to shipping but i doubt cause the plant seems stable and intact in the media. I have heard that they have good customer service and I hope this is true. I'm located in baltimore city and the weather is up and down. Keeping it indoors for now until late spring. Keeping it warm and humid for now. Hope it survives.

Vandas do easily recover from this. It might need a source of bottom heat for a while to stimulate the roots. If you are not happy, however, you should contact Hausermann's and tell them (in a nice manner) what you have discovered. They will likely try to fix things for you. They are a very good company. When dealing with plants, these things can and do happen, unfortunately.
Good luck!

It is better to call Hausermann's. You'll get a much faster response. I had to call them once about receiving the wrong orchid and they were really nice.

I just wanted to give an update on this plant. Hausermann's replied to my email saying that they have other sanderiana's but the root system would only be marginally better cause they lose most of their roots during winter and come back with a new root system during the warmer months........ok. we all now that's not true. they told me that they would replace the plant if it doesn't grow new roots within two months. Right now it's growing a new fat root after following ray's advice of soaking it in kelpmax for an hour everyday for three days then going to a monthly application. It triggered one root to start growing quite rapidly and keeping it warm under fluorescent lights is helping it recover.

Leaf shape is normal for sanderiana (which at one point was split out of Vanda as Euanthe). They can easily bloom on plants half that size, but lack of adequate light might have something to do with that issue.
