Esh! Good thing I only decided to repot the oncidium I had. I also have a mat. Royal robe that's still in its original media (spag) that I was going to change out but now I'm not so sure I want to attempt it! Last night I had a nightmare that all the pseudobulbs on my oncidium turned yellow and fell off!

ok, so the old roots look pretty much dead... all papery and white and don't plump up with water. good news is that the new growths are sending out new roots like crazy. thank goodness.... hope it will be okay...

Roots look good!

I usually use smaller bark mix for oncidiums. And they really like being very moist, especially when weather is warmer.

i think that's where i went wrong... didn't condition them slowly into drier medium... i just figured that the bag of medium said it was for oncidiums so i assumed it was okay... didn't take into account it was in moss before...

When you use new bark the bark does not retain water well, so you need to water more. After the bark begins to decay, you get more water retention.

Oncidium mix is usually more fine grade than phal mix, or you can add some more moisture retaining things. Moss, choir etc. A top dressing is an excellent choice.

With this size media you can pretty much water all you want. Oncidiums and their intergenerics don't like to be repotted too frequently so let this stay in this pot as long as possible. When the new growth starts to grow out of the pot then repot it. These can make impressive plants. Once the plant gets large you can cut it into smaller newer groups of pbulbs and plant them together. Then watch you friends swoon with envy.
