If memory serves they do not like to be potted. But I could be wrong.

Heres how I care for mine:

Mine sit in a vanda box with some lava rock on the bottom. Then I mist heavily till I see green on the rootz every other day or so in winter and just about everyday in summer. Pretty warm here in summer. Then soak once a week w feed and once a month w seaweed extract. Works wonders. For mine.

Good luck.

Baskets. They tend to grow very long roots that need to come out a basket. I like the octagonal wooden baskets myself.

Many people have success with vase culture, basically just put the roots in a vase, the plant sits on top. Watering is done by filling the vase with your water and feed, leave to soak for 15 minutes or so and then fully drain. you could do this say once a week and then mist the roots inbetween.

Thanks so much for the ideas. The base with water seems to be the more reliable for my schedule! Any recommended fertilizer for Vandas?

I grow my all my Vandaceous orchids with mix in either net pots or baskets. They only get watered once a week, so the medium is needed to keep their roots moist.
I use mostly spaghnum for small net pots,
1/3 bark in smaller baskets,
and 2/3 bark in larger baskets

In summer (in NJ), they can go outside and into full sun after hardening under a lattice. Exposed like that, they should be watered daily (with a couple of extra mistings when possible), and fertilized weekly.

I only have one Vanda coerulea plant. It is grown in a basket with no media. But the vendor that provided this plant to me festooned live Spanish moss in and around the base. Both plants are thriving. I have my Vanda growing in a southern facing room with lots of bright light. I am watering about once a week, misting every morning. I also have a fan blowing intermittently circulating the heated air and humidity.

Thank you! You saved my life!! I could not water it daily due to lack of time and could not watch it die either... Thanks!!

I grow most of mine potted in clear plastic pots with large grade bark. Some of them I grow in opaque plastic pots with large grade bark. I have a couple in opaque plastic pots grown in diatomite. All grown outdoors all year round here in Southern California. Works well for me.

If the pots can provide enough air circulation, there're no problems whatsoever.

I've grown them this way for years.

The idea that Vandas cannot grow potted is a MYTH I wish would just go away. It's wrong, and my Vandas are proof of it. You cannot beat the evidence that I've done it for close to 8 - 9 years for some, and 4- 5 years for others. With the majority of them blooming multiple times under my care already.

(Yes, you read correctly, I typed years, NOT months. And, again, yes, you read correctly, I stated that I had multiple species growing potted.)

I'll say it again - VANDAS CAN GROW POTTED; WHEN PEOPLE PERPETUATE THAT VANDAS CANNOT GROW POTTED, IT IS A COMPLETE MYTH THAT HAS NOT BEEN CHALLENGED.

Challenge this myth, I dare people to, and come back onto the OB and write about their findings. When done right, Vandas CAN be potted. Again, I double doggone, triple dare someone, anyone, to grow a Vanda potted, and do it right - it can be done.
